Works to restart under Alert Level 3

Under COVID-19 Alert Level 3 we are able to recommence our work on Takaka Hill.

Work at Alert Level 3 will not look like pre-pandemic work. A range of new measures will be in place, including restricted access to sites, requirements for workers to maintain physical distancing, and the use of additional protective clothing.

Night works will recommence from Sunday 3 May.

The road will be closed from 9pm and 6am for up to two weeks Sunday to Thursday while we continue work to replace the orange water filled barriers with steel W-barriers. These new barriers will provide better protection for workers and people using the road while the five major slip sites are repaired.

The road will be opened for a short period each night for travel permitted during Level 3. Vehicles making essential trips towards Takaka will be allowed through at 1.45am and those heading to Nelson at 1.30am. Emergency services will be able to use the road at all times.

Once the barriers have been replaced, work to build new retaining walls at the significantly damaged sites will get underway.

We hope this update finds you and your whanau well during these uncertain times and we thank you for your continued support to help us get Takaka Hill back up and running.

Please don’t run the red lights

We’re aware that there have been instances of drivers running the red lights on the hill during the lockdown. Even with the decreased traffic volumes this is extremely dangerous. Local police have been informed of the situation and drivers caught running the lights will be fined.
