Health and safety measures support in-person learning

To safeguard an in-person, on-campus experience this fall, students, staff and faculty will be required to be vaccinated and have a booster shot. Masking will be required indoors in instructional spaces.

$2M investment extends program supporting survivors of intimate partner violence

Marilyn Ford-Gilboe, women’s health research chair in rural health and professor in the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing, received $2M in federal funds to extend and continue testing the Intervention for Health and Living (iHEAL), a project to improve the health, safety and well-being of women experiencing intimate partner violence.

Student writer-in-residence looks to unite creative community

Award-winning Jamaican author and poet Matthew Dawkins is the student writer-in-residence for 2022 to 2023. Entering his fourth year in the School for Advanced Studies in the Arts and Humanities (SASAH), Dawkins is studying English language and literature. His works on Wattpad, a popular platform for creative writers, have amassed nearly half a million reads.  

Two graduate students are uncovering the mysteries of the mushroom as part of their summer field research

A team of mycologists (fungi experts) spent the past two summers in Newfoundland studying and looking for new uses for mushrooms. Fungi, which provide life-sustaining nutrients to plants and eat bacteria, are also being used to create Styrofoam alternatives, meat substitutes and medicines.

Wind energy research facilities receive critical investment

Western received more than $3.8M from the Canada Foundation for Innovation to support the Wind Engineering, Energy, and Environment (WindEEE) Research Facilities. WindEEE is the only facility in Canada with a wind dome that can generate local and large weather systems, such as tornadoes and hurricanes, allowing researchers to test and understand the effects of weather and climate change on infrastructure.
