December 2021 President's UpdateHello fellow students and interested parties, Happy Holidays! The SSCCC is continuing to visit colleges in person to hear directly from students. This past month, we have heard from students from Region II (Lake Tahoe College), Region V (Madera College, Clovis Community College, Reedley College, and Fresno City College), and Region X (San Diego City College). You can read more about our findings in this newsletter. This November, we celebrated the heritage and legacies of Native Americans and Indigenous Peoples while also acknowledging their current struggles both past and present. We had the privilege to have a conversation with Assemblymember James Ramos, the first California Indian to be elected to the California State Assembly, and Jesus Valle, American River College, Native American Resource Center Director. Please check them out via Instagram @SSCCC_Official and our YouTube Channel. Resolution season has arrived! If you are interested in writing a resolution(s), now is the time. The SSCCC is hosting several webinars to help you prepare to create an effective and impactful resolution to present at the 2022 General Assembly. Resolutions are a direct way for students to advocate for students and directly influence the priorities of the Student Senate. For more information, please email Resolutions Committee Chair, Jack Hill, radregioni@ssccc.org. Are you interested in stepping into state-level advocacy? The Student Senate offers multiple opportunities to get involved in advocacy. Several vacancies remain in the regions, as well as the state level. To learn more about how you can get involved in a leadership role or in our caucus, please check out our website at this page or email me at president@ssccc.org. As we end the year, the SSCCC wishes you a warm holiday season and a prosperous new year. In solidarity, President Chavez Native American Heritage MonthIn celebration of the Native American Heritage Month, President Chavez interviewed the first Native American Indian elected to the Legislature -- Assemblymember James C. Ramos. Watch the video below to learn more about Native American challenges and what Assemblymember James Ramos is doing in the legislature, as well of how you can help the Native Indian community. If you have questions please check out our website or email the Conference Committee chair Jessica Dominguez at radregionix@ssccc.org. SSCCC Colleges VisitsAs colleges begin opening, the SSCCC has been visiting colleges and listening to our student colleagues. Since October, we visited the following 6 regions and 19 colleges:
What we discovered during our conversations was that each college has unique needs but overall student needs and challenges were very similar. These challenges include lack of access to basic needs, financial aid, mental health resources, veteran resources, as well as housing and food insecurities, unclear pandemic policies and instructions, and so much more. When students share their stories with the SSCCC leadership, they empower us to advocate on behalf of students statewide. This winter break, SSCCC leadership will plan our local visits for the spring. If you're interested in us visiting your college, please contact our Community Organizer Stephen Kodur at skodur@ssccc.org. UPCOMING EVENTSExecutive Committee and Board MeetingsGenerally, the SSCCC Board of Directors meets on the second Friday and Saturday. There are a few exceptions. The SSCCC Executive Committee meets on the Friday prior to the SSCCC Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is transitioning to a hybrid format with both in-person and online.
