DOJ Publication Justice Department Announces Release of Violent Crime Reduction Roadmap Attorney General Merrick B. Garland announced the release of the Department of Justice's Violent Crime Reduction Roadmap, a one-stop shop to assist local jurisdictions in developing, implementing, and evaluating strategies to prevent, intervene in, and respond to violent crime. The roadmap helps connect jurisdictions with the information and resources they need to meet the complex and evolving challenges to help reduce violent crime. The announcement came during the opening session of the department’s Violent Crime Reduction Summit, which brings together federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial partners across the country to identify evidence-informed practices to increase public safety, enhance partnerships in the participating communities, and reduce violent crime. COPS Publication Police Recruitment and Selection Published by the Office for Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), this guide presents summaries of publications describing innovative strategies and rigorously tested recruitment and selection tactics in a format that is concise and accessible. All information is cross-tabulated on an easy-to-read table that allows readers to easily identify resources (and specific page numbers within the resource) that address 14 relevant themes such as mentorship and outreach to schools, focusing on various underrepresented groups. This work supports a comprehensive commitment by the U.S. Department of Justice to provide resources for the field to help police leaders meet the challenges of recruitment and staffing, as indicated by the 2023 publication of Recruitment and Retention for the Modern Law Enforcement Agency, a joint publication of the Bureau of Justice Assistance and the COPS Office. PERF Publication The CLOUD ACT and Implications for Law Enforcement This new report published by the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) provides an overview of the CLOUD Act and the practical implications for law enforcement, followed by a discussion of the challenges presented by Europe’s newly enacted General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The passage of the CLOUD Act (short for Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data) seemingly resolved the Microsoft case and was considered a victory for law enforcement in its quest to lawfully obtain data housed in overseas servers by U.S.-based companies.
