Stone column work underway near Girven Road

Stone column ground improvement work has started along SH2, south of Girven Road, with approximately one quarter of the 131 columns in the small area completed.

The column installation is taking longer than expected due to encountering a silty, sand layer at about 10 metres deep. The silt is denser and takes longer to drill through, and based on current progress we would expect this section of stone columns to be finished in mid May.

These stone columns need to be installed while the new Maunganui-Girven southbound on ramp is being constructed, because once traffic is moved onto the new lanes it will be difficult to access this part of road. Once the stone column work has been completed in this area the drilling rig will return to work near the Te Maunga intersection.

Regular monitoring has been carried out to confirm we are operating within the specified noise and vibration levels, however, if you are in close proximity you may hear cutlery or pictures on walls rattling. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have any queries or concerns please call 0508 222 4636.

Tactiles - the devil is in the detail

The shared use path on the corner of Matapihi Road and Owens Place will be completed once the placement of tactiles is confirmed.

Tactiles are raised bars or studs that are felt through the feet or cane to direct visually impaired people along a pedestrian footpath or crossing. Without the new permanent traffic islands in place to provide physical markers, we are reviewing the design to ensure the tactiles are orientated correctly before installing them.

Once confirmed, the tactiles will be installed and the concrete poured to complete the shared use path. Landscaping will then take place and the fencing removed.

The businesses in the area continue to operate as usual, and we wish to thank them and their customers for their patience as we progress the Bay Link project.

What lies beneath the surface

The sewer pipe near the Te Maunga intersection is being relocated before construction of the new SH29A rail overpass starts.

The relocated pipe will be close to the foot of the new bridge abutment, approximately one metre from the sheet piles that form the trench walls (pictured).

The weight of the embankment for the new bridge will cause settlement in the surrounding area and to ensure this does not affect the gradient of the new sewer pipe, it will remain suspended so it can be adjusted during the settlement period.

When the ground has finished settling, the trench will be backfilled.

Bayfair entrance closed temporarily

The new Bayfair Shopping Centre entrance off SH2 Maunganui Road is closed temporarily.

Access is available through the Jackson Street entrance - the one closest to the Bayfair roundabout.

The closure is needed so this section of Maunganui Road can be widened for the new roundabout approach. Earthworks for the road widening have started now that a water main in the verge has been relocated (pictured).

The Bayfair Shopping Centre has kindly agreed to let Maunganui Road residents between Concord Avenue and Jackson Street use the entrance to gain access to their properties while road widening is carried out.
