Mill and fill repair works Kia ora and welcomeWelcome to the Northland state highway maintenance roadworks update. In this e-news, we share updates on maintenance and renewal roadworks across the state highway network from Topuni all the way to Te Reinga Wairua (Cape Reinga). With our summer maintenance programme set to begin in next month, we’ll share weekly updates with you to let you know what work is happening on our state highways, where it’s happening and when, to help you plan your journey. While the season hasn’t officially begun, we’re already busy with preparation works. Below we share an update on progress at SH1 Towai, where enabling works are underway ahead of the planned road rebuild this coming season. Whenever you come to a worksite, remember that our road workers are doing their best to complete their work and keep you moving. Please be respectful and follow their advice and instructions. We know roadworks can be disruptive, and we appreciate your patience while we carry out these improvements. Stay updated on road conditions before you travel at: https://journeys.nzta.govt.nz/.

Enabling works underway along State Highway 1 (SH1), Towai SH1 Towai works making steady progressIf you’ve travelled through Towai recently, you’ll have seen plenty of activity on SH1. Work is in full swing to improve drainage, strengthen the road edges and shoulders, and upgrade culverts and kerbs – all laying the groundwork for the full rebuild this coming season. Doing this work now means the rebuild can be completed more efficiently and with less disruption, helping deliver a safer, smoother journey once complete. We’re using the NZGTTM (NZ Guide to Temporary Traffic Management) risk-based approach to manage the traffic and keep workers safe. This has significantly reduced daily setup time, minimising delays for road users and keeping traffic flowing. Next steps include finishing the remaining shoulder work, installing another drainage crossing, and preparing the road base for the rebuild. If you’re travelling through, the GAS Towai station is open and accessible as usual. The SH1 Towai works run from Sunday 14 July to November, with stop/go traffic management between Towai Road and Ruapekapeka Road. This is a joint activity between Far North Roading and Wharehine on behalf of NZTA. |
