Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, proudly delivering the New Zealand Upgrade Programme

Mill Road

23 January 2023

Further work on business case

Since the designation for Mill Road was put in place in 2016, there have been a lot of changes resulting in some uncertainty for the local community. We appreciate how frustrating this may have been.

We’ve been developing options to upgrade the Mill Road north area (parts of Redoubt Road, Murphys Road, Mill Road and Cosgrave Road)*. We’re currently carrying out further investigations following feedback from Joint Ministers for Transport and Finance because this programme of work is Crown funded as part of the New Zealand Upgrade Programme (NZUP).

These options will now be presented in a business case for joint ministers’ approval in mid-2023.

If we receive ministers’ approval to take the project forward, we will be asking the community for feedback to help with refining the project designs.

We know waiting can be frustrating, and may cause worry for some people, but it is vital that we do the work required to allow ministers to make a decision on an important transport solution for the area.

We will provide an update as soon as we can.

*Full description of the Mill Road north area: Redoubt Road from Hollyford Drive to Mill Road; Murphys Road from Flatbush School Road to Redoubt Road; Mill Road from Redoubt Road to Hamlin Road; Cosgrave Road from Hamlin Road to Fernaig Street.

Te kaupapa | Project background

The Government decided in 2021 to re-focus their investment in South Auckland towards safety, improving public transport, walking and cycling to help decarbonise the transport system and support new housing.

The Government made this decision to meet climate change and housing objectives, as well as manage costs and debt responsibly following COVID-19.

Savings from these changes to the Mill Road corridor project allows investment in transport upgrades to:

  • provide access to planned new housing development and rail stations in Drury
  • support the Government’s decarbonisation goals
  • make streets safer
  • provide more reliable connections

The previous proposal for the full Mill Road corridor (which is not proceeding through NZUP) remains part of the South Auckland strategic transport network, as agreed by central government and Auckland Council. Long term route protection remains a consideration but would be dependent on funding availability through sources other than NZUP.
