Making State Highway 1 between the Ashley River and Belfast safer for everyone

The NZ Transport Agency has been looking at ways to make it safer and easier to travel on State Highway 1 between the Ashley River and Belfast, north of Christchurch.

Too many people are being killed or seriously injured in crashes on this stretch of road, and locals tell us they feel unsafe using some intersections and walking or cycling - especially around the Woodend township area. People have also told us speed is a concern.

We collated all the great feedback we received from the community and we have been working with key stakeholders, such as Waimakariri District Council and emergency services, to make this road safer and help stop people being killed or seriously injured in crashes.

Based on what we have learnt we are proposing improvements such as safety barriers, turnaround bays, roundabouts and changes to intersections.

We’re also looking at changes to Woodend township to make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to get around, and we are going to formally consult the community on new speed limits between Waikuku and Lineside Road.

Before we make any final decisions, we want to hear from you.

Find out more and have your say on our project webpage or come and see the team at one of our open days.

We’ll be at the Waikuku Beach Hall on Friday, 9 August from 10am until 1pm and at the Woodend Community Centre the following day, Saturday, 10 August, from 1.30pm until 4.30pm.

You can pop in any time during these hours.

Early next week we will send out more detailed information about the speed consultation.  We encourage you to get involved and help us make this high risk stretch of road safer for everyone.
