Update on progress and construction timings

Since our last newsletter, the project team has been focused on finalising designs and property acquisition, as well as working through the designation and consenting process with Selwyn District Council for Stage One of the project.

Stage One

Construction is set to begin in October 2025, with the new roundabout at the intersection of State Highway 1, Walkers Road and Dunns Crossing Road.  This includes a new rail level crossing and a subway under the highway for pedestrians and cyclists, which will make crossing the highway much easier and safer for people walking and biking.

During this stage we are also making improvements at Weedons Road interchange, to reduce queuing on the southbound off-ramp.

Check out the video representations below to see how the new roundabout will work.

Stage Two

This stage will deliver:

• the new bridge across State Highway 1 and railway at Rolleston Drive
• a new service lane into businesses on the state highway and into Tennyson Street
• a free left out turn at Hoskyns Road onto the motorway
• left in / left out turns at Rolleston Drive (south), Brookside Road and Tennyson Street (left in turn via the service lane)
• removal of both sets of traffic signals on the highway.

Construction on this part of the project is due to begin in October 2026 and once completed, will reduce state highway congestion, improve safety and connectivity, and support planned growth in Rolleston.

View the video representations below to see how the new overpass will work.
