Northern Pathway - Westhaven to Akoranga Project

Kia ora,

As announced on Saturday by Transport Minister Michael Wood, the Government has confirmed it will not proceed with the standalone bridge portion of the Northern Pathway project in its current form and has indicated it would like to see other options to support walking and cycling over the Waitematā harbour.

Waka Kotahi remains committed to improving walking and cycling across Auckland by building new infrastructure and funding our partners Auckland Transport to develop local pathways. We have made significant progress on expanding and improving Auckland’s wider walking and cycling network over the past ten years.

We will continue to explore short, medium and long-term solutions for a walking and cycling connection over the Waitematā Harbour while continuing work on landward sections of the wider Northern Pathway already under construction as part of the Northern Corridor Improvements Project (NCI).

Next steps

Since Waka Kotahi appointed the Northern Pathway Alliance in September 2020, it has undertaken significant work on what is a complex engineering project. The alliance will now complete the design concept for bridge portion of the Northern Pathway before stopping further work.

Waka Kotahi will now need to consider the impact of not progressing with the standalone bridge portion of the Northern Pathway as we work to confirm the form, function and timing of longer-term additional Waitematā Harbour connections. This work takes time due to its scale and complexity, however, Waka Kotahi is working with our partners to carry out this out as quickly as possible.

We expect to provide an update on short, medium and long-term solutions for a walking and cycling connection over the Waitematā Harbour by mid 2022.

We understand that these delays are frustrating and we thank you for your continued support of the project. For further information, please visit the Northern Pathway webpage here.
