He Pānui

Kia ora koutou! Welcome to this edition of He Pānui - Te Māngai Pāho, keeping you up to date with the latest news in te reo Māori content and funding across Aotearoa!

Sector hui

Last month we met with several people from the sector and shared some of our plans and thinking for the 2025/26 financial year. We also shared some updates to our content and data strategies. You can find a link to our presentation here. Thank you to those who attended and shared your pātai, whakaaro and feedback.

Next steps: We plan to run a series of workshops to share thinking and gain insight of a series of priority areas. Keep an eye out for those invites, we will ensure they will include online options so all can attend.

Whakanuia - Stacey Morrison

Stacey was recognised at this year's Radio & Podcast Awards for her outstanding contributions to radio. Recognition for Stacey's work in broadcasting and as an advocate for te reo Māori is extremely well deserved.

Kāti rā, ki a tātou ngā urupā o rātou mā, ngā waihotanga mai e hāpai nei i ō rātou wawata, tūmanako hoki, tēnā tātou.

Mauriora!

While te ao Māori bade farewell several luminaries this year, we in the broadcast sector had our share of losses as well. In particular,  I think of Andrew Shaw who recently passed away. We will all have very fond memories of Andrew. Mine is from 2006 when Māori Television broke new ground with the first all day ANZAC broadcast. At a very late stage in our preparations we recognised that perhaps we were stretching our capacity. We contacted Andrew, he willingly came to our aid and helped make ANZAC 2006 the groundbreaking broadcast it was.

Mānawatia a Matariki mā Puanga

Tune in LIVE from Tirorangi Marae in Ohakune on Friday June 20, as they lead a powerful celebration of one of Aotearoa’s most significant cultural holidays - Matariki.

Now in its fourth year, the prestigious LIVE broadcast is embraced and celebrated across multiple networks and media outlets across Aotearoa. This year, Matariki mā Puanga (previously broadcast with the title Mānawatia a Matariki) begins at 5.45am with the traditional hautapu ceremony, honouring ancient customs and ushering in the Māori New Year.

This year's theme recognises the sacred relationship between the stars Matariki and Puanga, both of which rise in Aotearoa’s eastern sky before dawn during the winter season.

Watch the Matariki broadcast tomorrow, Friday 20 June, from 5:45am on Whakaata Māori, TVNZ 1, TVNZ+, Sky Open, PasifikaTV, Stuff, matariki.com, RNZ and Iwi radio.
