As we drive into 2024 – here’s an update on SH58

The third and arguably, the most complex part of the SH58 Safety Improvement Project will begin next year but there’s still a lot to do between now and then.

A tremendous amount of work has been happening behind the scenes for the final consenting and landowner agreements to be reached before we can progress to the final stage.

We’ve worked through questions around the consent applications we lodged for changes proposed for the last stage of the project between Moonshine Road and the Transmission Gully interchange.

To recap, the final stage of works runs from Moonshine Road to the SH1-SH58 Interchange (Transmission Gully).

Works include:

• Two new roundabouts at Moonshine Road, and Flightys/Murphys Roads

• Shared paths around the roundabouts

• Road widening, adding wider sealed shoulders and side barriers

• Installing median barriers for the entire length of the road

• Improved drainage to collect and treat water run-off from the road.

The programme of works and design for that section is currently being finalised. We hope to be able to share this with everyone early in the new year.

Our contractors have been busy over the last few months making safety improvements between Harris Road and east of Moonshine Road.

Large infrastructure projects such as this are complex and take time – especially if we want to do the work up to a good standard so that the road will stand the test of time with the 20,000 vehicle trips it supports every day.

We couldn’t do it without you!

For people using this very busy highway, we know that you just want to get to your destination as quickly as possible – without the hassle of road works slowing you down.

Large infrastructure projects such as SH58 are incredibly complex, and we fully acknowledge that there are times when unexpected things happen. Much of the work is completed at night to minimise traffic disruption but some work must be completed during the day to ensure the safety of road workers.

There were some days last month when people were held up by a stop/go traffic restriction during road sealing work, that resulted in sometimes more than 40-minute delays on a rather warm day.  We planned for this stop/go to be between 9.00am and 2.00pm when there’s usually less traffic, however, much more traffic was experienced on that day, than we’d anticipated.

We really do our best to work-in the potential impacts of our contractors on the highway, and how it will affect everyone differently.  Sometimes, there are things we can’t control but we’re always monitoring the situation.

How do I report an issue?

If you ever need to report an incident or concern about a highway, please call the freephone
0800 4 HIGHWAYS or 0800 44 44 49. These calls are received by a national call centre which is staffed 24/7 – every day of the year.

Use this number to report issues impacting travel on our state highways, or even to get the latest state highway travel information. For questions about the project, you can also email us on SH58Safety@nzta.govt.nz.
