Ōtaki River Bridge shared path

Connecting communities

31 March 2025

Ōtaki River Bridge clip-on now open

On Friday, we opened the Ōtaki River Bridge clip-on to its first pedestrians and cyclists. This is a significant piece of work, linking Ōtaki with the rest of the region's existing shared pathways.

Funded as part of the Peka Peka to Ōtaki Expressway works, the 208-metre-long structure has 15 spans – each weighing 4 tonnes, and is made of lightweight composite fibre.

Physical work on the clip-on started in August last year, with the goal to have it open to the public by the first quarter of 2025.

Good news for road users, cyclists, and pedestrians

The clip-on creates safer and more enjoyable journeys for everyone. By separating walking and cycling paths from other road users, it limits the risk to pedestrians and cyclists from live traffic. That’s good news for everyone.

The shared path links the township with the rest of Kāpiti via existing shared pathways, and will help improve safety of walking and cycling, and encourages recreation and tourism in Ōtaki.

We look forward to seeing you all out and about in Ōtaki, enjoying this great new community asset!

What's next for Ōtaki Bridge

On Monday 14 April, weather permitting, NZTA Wellington Transport Alliance will be resurfacing the Ōtaki River Bridge. The works will be for one night and will mean the bridge will be closed between 9pm - 4.30am. People will need to take alternative routes. These works will make the bridge smoother and safer.
