Respect the Road – it takes all of us

Every day, road workers across Aotearoa New Zealand are out in all conditions, rebuilding and maintaining the roads we all rely on.

Whether it's a quick repair or a full rebuild, these crews work hard to keep our journeys safe and reliable.

But they can’t do it alone. We need every driver to play their part:

  • Slow down near work sites
  • Follow temporary speed limits within each work site
  • Stay alert and avoid distractions
  • Show respect to the people doing the mahi.

Unfortunately, workers are reporting reckless driving through their worksites. We’re asking all drivers to make safe choices – for themselves and our crews,” says Liesl Dawson, System Manager for Manawatū-Whanganui and Taranaki. “We know most drivers do the right thing – but even one risky choice can have serious consequences.”

“We understand that road works can be disruptive to travel but we are doing this work so we can maintain safe and reliable journeys. We aim to give plenty of notice before work starts and around work sites. Please plan ahead and factor in time for some delays.”

Spring driving

Spring is the season of change and brings with it some challenging driving conditions at times, including strong winds and patches of heavy rainfall.

NIWA’s Seasonal Climate Outlook shows monthly rainfall around Taranaki in September were above average in virtually all but two areas of Taranaki – Hāwera and New Plymouth.

With more unsettled spring weather on the way for the region, driving to the conditions is, as always, critical to a safe journey.

Wear your seatbelt, drive to the conditions, and if the roads are busy, watch your following distances and avoid unsafe passing. No one likes being stuck in traffic, but it is far better to arrive late than not arrive at all. If strong wind warning or watches are in place, be careful, especially if you’re on a motorbike or in a high-sided vehicle like a truck.

We also urge drivers to ensure they’re rested and to take breaks if they’re making a long trip. Drive safe, drive alert.

You’ll continue to notice crews out on the state highway network responding to any weather related issues in addition to carrying out our season of summer maintenance in the region.
