Why alternative proteins?

A new global survey of 7,500 adults has revealed that the climate impacts of industrialised meat production is still largely misunderstood by consumers. The survey, commissioned by sustainable food NGO Madre Brava, found that the majority of citizens in Brazil, France, Germany, the UK, and the US do not consider industrial meat production a leading cause of climate change.

In the five markets surveyed, industrial meat production was viewed to be a smaller source of emissions than cars or planes, even though animal agriculture accounts for a minimum 14.5% of all human-made emissions.

Madre Brava suggests the lack of awareness of the climate impact of industrial meat production is in part due to the media under-reporting on the matter, with analysis of top-tier news outlets in the US, UK and English-language EU media finding that only 0.5% of articles on climate mentioned meat or livestock as a source of emissions.
