Making Black Lives Matter in Philadelphia: Perspectives from the Health Sciences

Host: Penn Libraries
In June 2020, thousands took to the streets in Philadelphia in support of Black lives and to protest police brutality. But how do we actually make Black lives matter in Philadelphia and across the nation? Gun violence is surging, claiming the lives of mostly Black young citizens. And while the Covid-19 pandemic has hit many Black communities the hardest, the initial vaccine roll-out has disproportionately vaccinated white individuals.

Join us for a conversation featuring Penn Professor Emeritus Dr. Albert Giovenella. He will give an introduction to terminology and methodology in pharmaceutical sciences, as well as areas of emphasis that the industry is and will follow to allow medicine in America and the rest of the world to meet our health and career needs. Along with his research, Dr. Giovenella will also share about potential careers in the biopharmaceutical field via his data on exciting new companies in the Biotech Industry.

Three central questions will be addressed: What is the current state of racial disparity regarding the topic? What are the root causes of this disparity? How has or might this disparity be best addressed?

Vaccine Information Champion Training

Host: Philly Counts & School of Nursing
Philly Counts is holding 90-minute, in depth trainings to become a Vaccine Champion, a trusted messenger equipped with the knowledge and tools to accurately and effectively answer questions about the COVID-19 Vaccine. Vaccine Champions will be part of a growing network that will share critical information to educate the public and increase uptake of the COVID-19 Vaccine through a neighbor-to-neighbor strategy.

What are PHINS?
PHINS (Peers Helping Incoming New Students) are New Student Orientation leaders who are trained to aid incoming first-year, transfer, First-Generation Lower-Income (FGLI), international, exchange, and second-year students with their academic, civic, cultural, emotional, and social adjustment to life at Penn. This interaction occurs before, during, and beyond NSO.
