The Month Ahead:What have we done and what is coming up?

The past few months have seen some big changes to SH1 near the Tarewa Road instersection. A house has been demolished, earth has been moved, noise walls have been built and power lines have been relocated.

The contractor, Downer New Zealand, has been carefully working around the Otaika Stream as construction is underway nearby. Teams are undertaking earthworks to the south of the stream and installing piles on both sides. The stream's significance to Mana Whenua and the local community, combined with its contribution to wildlife and the Whangarei waterways means that close monitoring and environmental controls are needed to ensure the water remains clean.

On Monday 17th December, the right turn into Tarewa Road from SH1 and the right turn out of Tarewa Road onto SH1 will be closed to road users. This required so that the intersection improvements can progress. For more detail, see the information below.

What have we done?

October and November

• We have built several new acoustic fences which will help reduce road noise for residents.

• Preparation work has begun to build a number of retaining walls which will allow for the widening of the state highway.

• The project team worked closely with Vector to temporarily relocate the overhead power cables and poles. This allows for the service trench to be excavated and for the power cables to be permanently relocated underground.

• The team have installed three piles on the northern side of the Otaika Stream and are currently installing another three on the southern side. The new, four lane bridge will be supported by these once it is built.

What will we do?

December

• Remove the traffic islands at the State Highway One and Tarewa Road intersection.

• Continue to install the piles which will support the southern side of the new Otaika Bridge.

• Begin to build the abutments for the new Otaika Bridge. The abutments are a vital part of the new bridge and will support the bridges weight along with the piles.

• Continue construction of the new acoustic fences and retaining walls on properties along Otaika Road.

•  Continue digging and installing underground services in the the service trench on the western side of Otaika Road.

Traffic Changes

The next stage of the works requires us to close the right turn into Tarewa Road from SH1 and the right turn out of Tarewa Road onto SH1 from Monday 17 December 2018.

The right turn closures will remain in place until the new traffic signals are operational, which is planned for early 2020.

Removing the right turn into and out of Tarewa Road allows the intersection improvement works to continue.

Plan your travel in advance
See the map below for our suggested detour routes and plan your new way to get to the Whangarei CBD and Okara.

Local Businesses Remain Open
Tarewa Road and Porowini Avenue businesses will remain open as usual while the right turn closures are in place.
