Kia Ora ,

As you close out 2023 and head into 2024, we have a fantastic opportunity for you to put your business forward for the 2degrees Business Digital Accelerator Programme.

This fantastic programme offers two businesses across New Zealand the opportunity to get ahead of the digital curve. The winners will receive an in-depth business and digital assessment from the experts at Smudge, a 12-month membership to their local Chamber of Commerce, and a $50k investment towards bespoke digital and technology improvements.

The Digital Accelerator programme is one way we are bringing your business and mission to life.  Over the last four years, 2degrees has developed an industry-leading study, examining trends in the New Zealand marketplace through interviews with thousands of business decision-makers across key industries in NZ. One of the insights that came out of the latest shaping Business study is that businesses making the best use of technology are out-performing those who are not. 2degrees is committed to Fighting for Fair for Kiwi Businesses by unlocking productivity through the smart use of technology.

The Digital Accelerator programme is open for entry now and closes on 2 February 2024 and it is really simple to enter. Winning businesses will be announced on 13 February 2024.

Wouldn’t it be great if it was a Hutt Valley business. Good Luck.

Demolition completed in Daly Street

For now, the site is clear, and the machinery is being moved off the site at Daly Street, Lower Hutt.

McMahon Services and the Hutt City Council team have done a great job in getting the site clear with the least amount of disruption as possible.

So what’s next? It does look a bit like we could grow some vegetables, but at this stage, the Hutt City Council are still planning the next steps on-site and assessing various options on how to proceed. Over the coming week or so, they will be taking some measures to stabilise the soil (by using a polymer spray) to mitigate against dust pickup in strong winds over the summer.

Watch this space (literally), and there will be more updates soon.

Global Economy Stabilises, New Zealand Lags: OECD Forecast

The global economy will continue to slow as inflation subsides, but will avoid a “hard landing” according to the latest economic outlook published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) on Wednesday(external link). The OCED projects that global growth would finish at 2.9 percent in 2023, slow to 2.7 percent in 2024, before slightly improving to 3.0 percent in 2025.

While the global economy will dodge any significant slowdown, the forecast for New Zealand is less rosy. The OECD projects that the New Zealand economy will grow just 1.3 percent in 2024 and 1.9 percent in 2025. This is substantially less than New Zealand’s potential economic growth rate, which was assessed in Treasury’s Pre-election Economic and Fiscal Update 2023(external link) to be 2.9 percent during this period.

Reserve Bank Holds Cash Rate Steady Amid Surging Demand and Inflation Risks

The Monetary Policy Committee of the Reserve Bank held the cash rate steady on Wednesday at 5.5 percent. The committee noted in its release that demand growth had not eased as much as anticipated during the first half of 2023, in part due to stronger than anticipated population growth. It also noted that while this population growth has eased supply constraints, there is a risk that this is increasing the risk of inflation remaining above target. If inflationary pressures were to be stronger than anticipated, the Committee noted that the cash rate would likely need to be increased further.
