Blackout Poetry

Tuesday 5 April, 4 - 5 pm

Blackout poetry is the treasure hunt of poetry. You find words that catch your interest from a newspaper, book, or magazine. You then “blackout” the words you don’t want, creating your own poem. Not only will you become a poet for the day, but also an artist as we take the poem and create a collage around it with a variety of mixed media. This is great for all teens.

He'll be sharing tips and tricks for aspiring authors, answering questions and giving away books.

Surfer Pat Trass

Local History: Youth Week

Surfing was seen as a boys only sport for many years, and one that was still gaining mainstream appeal throughout the first half of the 20th Century. Pat Trass changed that when she became the first woman to enrol in the Australian Surf Board Association in 1945. A trailblazer at 18, Pat became a regular on the waves at Bondi Beach, and by 1946, nine other women had followed her lead and joined the surf association. This included 13 year old Joan Staples, reportedly the keenest member of the club. Practicing before and after school and on weekends, she even sold her bicycle so that she could buy her own surf board!

Author Talk: George Paxinos with A River Divided

Thursday 7 April, 6:30 - 7:30 pm

 Join local Author and Professor of Medical Sciences at Neuroscience Research Australia and The University of New South Wales, George Paxinos as he presents his latest novel A River Divided. The story came to George when a friend suggested he visit Santiago de Compostela, where it’s said St James’ remains are buried. He thought of harvesting DNA from the remains to produce a clone, but then thought why not from someone far greater?

A woman is solving Cryptic Crosswords

Cryptic Crosswords beginners series

Wednesdays 13 April, 10 am and 27 April, 12 pm

Ever tried to solve a cryptic crossword puzzle? It may seem challenging at first but gives great satisfaction when successfully solved. All it takes is a bit of patience, plus awareness of some basic rules and tricks of the trade. Join expert Ralph Penglis in a series of two workshops designed for beginners, as well as those who have some prior experience and would like to sharpen their skills. Participants are encouraged to attend both sessions.
