Welcome to the November 2019 construction update

The Southern Corridor Improvements (SCI) project is working at full pace, aiming to have three motorway lanes in each direction between Takanini and Papakura open by the end of this year. The full four lanes southbound from Manukau to Hill Road were opened this month.

Here is the latest on what’s been happening across the project over the last month, as well as what’s coming up.

There will be a Community Information Evening held from 5.30pm on Tuesday 3 December 2019 at the SCI Project Office, 8-12 Great South Road, Takanini (behind the Gull Service Station). Members of the public are welcome to attend to find out more about the project’s progress and timeline to completion.

Landmark bridge crosses southern motorway (SH1)

The landmark footbridge over SH1 linking Pahurehure Esplanade Reserve and Pescara Point Reserve (Hingaia) was lifted into position during October. Work is continuing to complete the deck surface, finish welding and safety checks, and connect the shared use path to the bridge approaches.

The temporary central support pillar will be removed in November, allowing for construction to begin on the permanent concrete safety barriers underneath.

The new bridge will be opened in early 2020.

Four lanes open from Manukau to Hill Road

At the northern end of the SCI Project, the central median barriers were completed during October and the protective work zone removed. This has allowed the full four southbound lanes to be opened between the SH20 interchange and the Hill Road off-ramp.

Final surfacing will soon be completed using EMOGPA – epoxy-modified open grade porous asphalt - a longer-lasting modern road surface that reduces road noise and water spray.

Finishing touches to lighting, signage and traffic cameras will be completed during November and December.

Traffic moving more smoothly over Pahurehure Inlet Bridge

In another project milestone, the Pahurehure Inlet Bridge has been paved and opened to southbound traffic. Traffic was switched onto the new bridge on the morning of 31 October.

A central median work zone has since been opened up to allow for the in-situ construction of modern concrete barriers to provide safe separation of northbound and southbound traffic. This work will continue throughout November and into December, and will include the installation of LED motorway lighting and signage.

Work will also continue on the shared use walking and cycling path that tracks along the northbound side of the motorway, including lighting and CCTV installation, and landscaping.

Takanini on-ramp alignment complete

The northbound on-ramp of the Takanini interchange was closed over Labour Weekend to allow structural pavement road works and bring the traffic lanes into their final alignment.

Shared use path continues

The shared use walking and cycling path has been constructed to just south of Walter Strevens Drive Bridge and has been paused temporarily while drainage is installed under the bridge and bridge protection works (to protect from overheight vehicles hitting it) are completed.
