Hi there

Double success for canterbury at the 2021 South Island Interprovincial

A great weekend for Canterbury Golf on 30-31 October saw both our women’s team take out their SIIP tournament in style at Timaru Golf course with the men’s team also impressive in taking out their respective competition at Ashburton Golf Course.

The women, looking to defend the title did so in style winning 3 from 3 games dropping just 6.5 points in total throughout the weekend. Stand-out performances from the middle of the playing order saw Catherine Bell, Olive Tapu, and Rachel Eder all secure 3 wins from 3. Solid unbeaten performances from no1 Maddie May and no7 Melissa Newburn also contributed towards a convincing team performance. A mention too is worthy for Melissa and Jasmine Clancy who were both giving up shots each round to their opposition in keeping with the tournament conditions of play.

Meanwhile, in Ashburton our men’s team were looking to regain the SIIP title since last winning it back in 2018. Coming out the blocks hot Canterbury won all their first-round matches to set a good foundation for the rest of the tournament. That form continued into round 2 where they recorded another 6 wins to leave themselves in pole position going into day 2 with 2 team wins on the board. The Sunday bought very windy conditions adding another element to contend with which resulted in a tough round 3 with close results against Southland 2-2 and Aorangi 3-1. The men finished strong however to record 7 victories in round 4 to complete the clean sweep with the team collecting 26.5 points from 32 overall. Zach May, Reid Hilton, and Dominic Brettkelly all recorded perfect 4 from 4 records with Matt McLean also going through undefeated with 3 wins and a half.

We look forward to seeing the teams perform on the national stage where the mens are defending champions at Ashburton Golf Club 30 November – 4 December, and the women will be looking to go one better at Timaru Golf Club 7-11 December. Teams will be named soon.

There was something for all our juniors through October starting with Canterbury Futures Open Events, a school holiday Girls Golf Event and a fun-filled Futures Festival have-a-go event at Ellesmere. Along with the events, the newly added programmes run by Matt Mcleand in Selwyn and the North-East are ready to kick-off, we are looking forward to the new faces we will meet with the introduction of the new programmes, it was great to see some of those who attended the Futures Festival also signed up to programmes and our upcomming Team Golf Events!

Canterbury Golf Administrators of the Year

On Thursday 7 October at The Elmwood Trading Co. in Wairakei Road Neville Bamford (Harewood) and Giles Beal (Russley) were presented as joint winners of the Canterbury Golf Administrator of the Year award. They are pictured here with sponsor and owner/operator of The Elmwood Trading Co. Marty Fuller.

The judges were unable to separate the pair with both making valuable contributions to their clubs over the last year. Giles, in his role as General Manager, was an integral part of the success of Russley's achievement as the 2021 Golf New Zealand Club of the Year. For Neville, this is the third year in a row he has won the award and reflects another "above and beyond" effort as General Manager of Harewood Golf Club. The club had another record year and Neville also contributed to regional activities by being on the Organsing Committee for the 2021 Canterbury Golf Club Forum, and also nationally as a Board Member of the Golf Managers Association of NZ.

We congratulate both recipients.

Selwyn Lads Hope to Trump Last Year’s Longest Day Golf Challenge Efforts

Lincoln landscaper Brodie Askew says that the challenge of completing 72 holes of golf in one day was a key motivator for him and his three team mates to sign up for the Cancer Society’s Longest Day Golf Challenge last year.

“Everybody goes out and plays 18 holes and on occasion we’ve done 27,” says Brodie.

“But that challenge of completing 72 holes in one day and having that task ahead of you makes you think about people dealing with cancer and that hurdle that they have ahead of them.”

Brodie and his “Selwyn Swingers” team mates, Ollie Thomson, Craig Nelson, and Brad Baxter, are all planning to complete the Longest Day Golf Challenge again this year.

“It was so rewarding and you are helping out a good cause,” says Brodie.

“Everybody knows somebody with cancer.”

Brodie and his team mates raised nearly $4,000 last year for the Cancer Society’s Canterbury-West Coast Division, with generous support from local building company Freedom Built, who donated $18 per hole completed and an extra $300 for completing the full 72 holes.

“We’ll see if we can trump last year’s efforts this year!” says Brodie.

The four friends completed the challenge in mid-December 2020, teeing off at sunrise around 6.30am and completing their first 36 holes at Ellesmere Golf Club by midday.

“We took a rest break for lunch and had completed the remaining 36 holes by around 6pm, so it took us around five and a half hours per 36 holes,” says Brodie.

“We decided that there would be no practice swings and that there was no time to go looking for balls if they couldn’t be found after about 20 seconds,” he says.

Brodie’s other advice for prospective participants is to have plenty of changes of socks to keep your feet fresh!

Go to www.longestday.org.nz for more information or to register for The Longest Day Golf Challenge. You can complete the challenge any day that suits between 1st December 2021 and 31st January 2022.

2021 Boys and Girls Interprovincial

The week 4-8 October saw our boys and girls age group teams travel away to their annual Interprovincial tournaments held at Cambridge Golf Club and Rotorua Golf Club respectively. Amongst the backdrop of some uncertain travel restrictions in the build-up to the events, both tournaments got the initial green light to proceed with both teams traveling out as planned.

Boys Interprovincial – Cambridge Golf Club

Canterbury named a strong team to attend this year’s event with depth from 1-4 in the U19 playing order and likewise 1-2 in the U16 category boding well for the future.
