Despite the stormy weather, there was a good turnout of students, academics and many members of the University community. It was a typically diverse Wolfson affair, with presenters who hail from over a dozen different countries. The topics ranged from 'Decolonisation' to 'Oligodendrocyte precursor cell differentiation' to 'The emotional dimensions of prison life'. Event Chair Aliandre Barlete tells us more in her report: The Lee Hall was full for our panel discussion, and the conversations continued afterwards over drinks at the President's Lodge. 'Imposters or Academics? For International Women's Day, WCSA and the College hosted a panel discussion on women's lives in academia — their struggles and successes. The panel was hosted by Rosie Agnew and featured Professor Jane Clarke, Dr Rasha Rezk and Azita Chellappoo, academics at different stages of their careers. The turnout and lively discussion shows there is a real appetite for this kind of discussion at Wolfson. Aicha Massrali studies 'brains in a dish' to better understand autism. She received a Cambridge Trust Award to support her research. STUDENT FUND Thank you to all alumni, friends and organisations who have donated in support of our students. You can now donate online to the Annual Fund. The very diversity we treasure at Wolfson means that our students are at disproportionate risk of facing funding and debt challenges. Join in and help raise even more so we can help every student who needs financial support. A gift of any size makes a difference. Expect to see spectacular visual effects at Wolfson's May Ball. May BallGreat news — Wolfson College's May Ball (formerly known as the June Event) takes place on 22 June. All Wolfson members are welcome — come and celebrate with us.
Sporting Success for Wolfson StudentsThis term saw some tremendous sporting results for Wolfson students. Dennis Mubaiwa and the University powerlifting team won their Varsity match. Athletics were well-represented by Gunther Klobe, who earned his Blue by clearing 1.95m in the high jump. Our men's football team topped the MCR league with straight wins. And although Lent Bumps were truncated for the first time in 50 years, the mens' and women's crews had strong showings. Several Wolfson students are rowing in University crews over the next few weeks, so look for the results on our website. With the hard work of WCSA, the gym has also been spruced up and stocked with new equipment. In skiing, Victoria Bell won her Blue, earning a jacket well suited to the recent weather conditions. UPCOMING EVENTS Christopher Le Brun, President of the Royal Academy, Exhibition at Wolfson College, University of CambridgeShown for the first time at Wolfson College, this visually challenging series of paintings is a continuation of Le Brun's most recent series of prints, Composer. Acknowledging the musical form of separate movements, and recognising painting's essentially layered structure, these new oil on paper diptychs by this internationally renowned painter, printmaker and sculptor create an opportunity for interdisciplinary discussion and debate. The exhibition will open 14 May in the Combination Room and Gallery.
