Taranaki state highway planned roadworks

Friday 6 February to Friday 13 February

5 February 2026

Chip sealing underway on State Highway 43

Kia ora,

Recent poor weather across the region has affected progress at some sites and as a result some work will continue over the Waitangi Day long weekend.

If you’re travelling through worksites, please follow all temporary traffic management and take extra care around workers and equipment.

With the long weekend beginning tomorrow, roads across the region are expected to be busy. Please allow extra time and drive to the conditions.

If you’re heading away, allow extra time, expect busier roads, and drive to the conditions. And before you set off, make sure to check the NZTA Journey Planner for real time travel information, road closures, and any delays that could affect your trip: journeys.nzta.govt.nz.

Thanks for your patience and for helping keep everyone safe on the roads this long weekend.

State Highway 3 – Awakino to New Plymouth

Due to multiple active work sites on SH3, allow an extra 40 to 60 minutes for your journey when travelling this corridor.

SH3 Mangapepeke Culvert replacements: Work is underway to replace 2 ageing culverts until April. Stop/go traffic management is in place.

SH3 Rapanui: Drainage work and a road rebuild will take place between Rapanui and Mohakatino roads from Monday 2 February until Friday 27 February, weather permitting. Stop/go traffic management will be in place.

SH3 Uruti: A road rebuild is underway between Uruti and Mangahia roads until Friday 20 March, weather permitting. Stop/go traffic management is in place.

SH3 Mimi River: A road rebuild is underway north of Mimi Road until Friday 13 February. Stop/go traffic management is in place.

SH3 Northgate (Watson Street to Mangorei Road): Micropaving will take place on the northbound lane on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 February from 7am to 7pm, weather permitting. This treatment improves the road surface and reduces traffic noise. One lane will close at a time, but as it is a 4-lane highway minimal delays are expected. Access to some side roads may be restricted while work is underway, but property and pedestrian access will be maintained.

SH3 Northgate (Waiwaka to Baring Terraces): Resurfacing of the southbound lanes with asphalt will take place over 4 to 5 nights from Sunday 8 February, weather permitting. Work will run from 7pm to 6am, with one lane closed at a time but as it is a four-lane highway minimal delays are expected. Access to some side roads may be restricted temporarily, but property and pedestrian access will be maintained.

State Highway 43

SH43 Tāngarākau Gorge: Scour and erosion repairs will take place underneath the bridge from Monday 2 February until Saturday 14 February, weather permitting. Work will run from 6am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday, under stop/go traffic management with delays of up to 30 minutes expected. Delays are due to large machinery on the road to access the underside of the bridge.

State Highway 45

SH45 Surf Highway: Asphalt patch repairs will take place between Pioneer Road and Belair Avenue from Thursday 12 February for about 1 to 2 nights, weather permitting. Work will run from 7pm to 6am under stop/go traffic management, with delays of around 5 to 10 minutes expected.
