Tram Road On-ramp signals to get green arrows

Thank you to everyone who has let us know the lights at Tram Road On-ramp are confusing.  We get what you are saying and have arranged for green arrows to be added to the signal poles. We will install these as soon as they arrive. This should be done next week.

In the meantime, the signals go green on one side of the on-ramp for cars coming from the west, and are red for cars coming from the east, then vice versa. So please be assured you can safely turn onto the on-ramp when you have the green light.

The new signals should mean more vehicles will be able to get through this intersection more efficiently and safely.  The new signals remove the time each driver has to take to decide if it's safe to turn or not.

Work on the shared path - please take care

We are so pleased the shared cycle path on the CNC is so popular, with hundreds of bikers, walkers and 'scooterers' every day.

The only downside for us - we still have work to do along and near the cycle path. Over the next weeks we will be installing signs, mowing, weeding, spraying, sweeping and tidying.

If you see our crews out on site, please take care, slow down and give them, and yourself plenty of room

Thank You

SH1 - upcoming night work

This Sunday and Monday night, SH1 will be reduced to one lane north and southbound from 6pm to 6am.  On Sunday we will be north of the Waimakariri Bridge and on Monday we will be south of the bridge. We will be working in both the right hand lanes, to chip seal the central median.   On Sunday the southbound shoulder will also be closed over night.

On Tuesday night SH1 southbound will be reduced to one lane, just south of the Waimakariri Bridge, as we work on the wire rope barriers.

Over the next two weeks we will also be working on many of the new gantries over night to install new equipment. This will require shoulder and short lane closures.

The temporary 80k/hr on SH1 signs should be removed in about 2 weeks.  We are still working on the final setup for the safety barriers in these areas and we are not allowed to go to 100k/hr until this work is completed and signed off by a safety auditor.

New direct bus service free for one more week and park & ride already popular

Metro have extended the free fares on the direct bus services from Waimakariri to central Christchurch until Friday 29 January. Feedback on the new services is great with people particularly enjoying the extra ‘me time’ gained on their journey to and from the city.

The new Waimakariri Park & Ride locations have also proved popular in the first few weeks of 2021 for people using the direct buses or the new shared path along the CNC.

T2 lanes open

The T2 Lanes on the CNC are already in use. You can use the T2 lanes if you have at least one passenger in your car (babies and children count, pets, even though part of the family, don't!). There are two T2 lanes southbound on the new CNC motorway:

  • The Tram Road On-Ramp T2 lane operates 24/7. It is also a freight lane, open to trucks.
  • The CNC Motorway T2 lane will operate from 6am to 9am, in the right-hand lane, on weekday mornings. Overhead signs tell you when it is in operation.

Buses can use T2 lanes. Motorcycles are also allowed in this lane with or without a passenger.

If you have a 'friend' who is still not sure how to use the T2 lanes, there is a great video and heaps of questions and answers on this website  nzta.govt.nz/letsride
