Moetapu Bay Road

Construction closures are in place on Moetapu Bay Road for drainage improvements, retaining wall construction and road reinstatement.

Excavation for the first retaining wall, approximately 1km from the start of the road has been completed and H-Piles installed this week. Timber lagging installation has now begun prior to backfilling the wall.

The closures will be in place Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm, with openings on the hour every hour.

Scheduled works will be undertaken at two locations. Closures for the first site, 1km from the start of the road are in place until mid-August. Once completed, the closure will move to a second site, 4.5km from the start of the road, where works will continue until late September.

Northbank

Crews continue to work on Northbank Road, 2km from the start of the road to clear the large slip that is blocking the road. They have established a catch bench at the base of the slip to collect any uncontrolled rockfall.

On Saturday 9 August, the road will be open to residents with essential travel. The planned closures will not be in place on Saturday due to the weather forecast giving an opportunity to allow more access for residents and rest the crew.

The planned closures will resume as scheduled from Monday 11 August at the below days and times:

  • Monday to Saturday: Closed 9am to 4pm
  • Wednesday and Saturday: Lunchtime opening 12pm to 1pm
  • Sunday and overnight each day: Open

The slip will continue to be monitored and if it is deemed unsafe, the road will be closed and an update sent via the Marlborough District Council's Facebook Page and Antenno.

Marlborough Roads engineers estimate over 20,000m3 of material will need to be removed from this site. Any rain is likely to exacerbate its movement.

When travelling near or past our work sites, please ensure you keep outside any fences or barriers for your safety. Please adhere to, and do not move any traffic or safety management in place (i.e. gated closures/cones/signs/traffic lights/barricades) for your own safety.

Drainage improvements and road reinstatement are to be completed under daytime construction closures. The closures will be in place from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Port Underwood

Temporary repairs have been undertaken on Port Underwood Road near Oyster Bay this week, to widen the road. Following specialist inspection this will allow heavy truck and trailer access from Waikawa to Oyster Bay from Monday 11 August.

The road remains closed from Oyster Bay to Rarangi. Works are continuing on the section of closed road to regain access.

Planned construction closures continue on the Waikawa side of Whatamango Bay, for bulk excavation works for a road retreat.  Drainage works are underway with the construction of a dish channel. Closures will continue to operate from Monday to Friday, from 9.30am to 2.30pm, until late August.

Works will be undertaken on weekdays at this site from 7am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 5pm, under stop/go traffic management with delays of up to 15 minutes.

Following the completion of pavement preparation, sealing has been completed above Governors Bay this week.

Tennyson Inlet

Construction of a second retaining wall and associated drainage improvements on Tennyson Inlet Road, prior to the Opouri Saddle which required daytime construction closures is complete.

This week tiebacks have been completed, and the wall has been backfilled. Crews continue with minor finishing works and pavement preparation under stop/go traffic management.

Sealing on one section will be undertaken in the coming weeks. Two further sites will be stabilised, with sealing to take place in warmer weather, once the road has reached the required temperature.

When crews disestablish from the site, speed restrictions will remain in place. Road users are urged to follow speed restrictions and all traffic management at this site. This is for drivers' safety, to maintain the integrity of the base course and limit the requirement for further works prior to sealing.
