Do good. Feel good.

NOVEMBER 2024 UPDATE

Last month, we introduced Community Enrichment Programs alongside our earthquake-resistant, sustainable block schools. Based on insights from our 2023 community consultation, these programs include the Sustainable Schools Initiative, Child Rights Awareness, Early Marriage Prevention, and English Empowerment.

Last week, the Sustainable Schools Initiative kicked off at Rempek 1 Primary School—and it was nothing short of heartwarming!

The session was led by our amazing local partner, Good Neighbours Indonesia (GNI), who brought in a professional storyteller and ventriloquist to make learning about plastic waste fun and engaging for the students.

Kak Fadli, a well-known figure in Lombok, has been spreading laughter for years. After the 2018 earthquakes, he used his puppet, Bajang, to bring joy to kids in affected communities. Now, he’s bringing his positive energy to the Sustainable Schools Initiative!

With support from GNI, Kak Fadli turned lessons on waste management, recycling, and proper disposal into an interactive and playful experience for the students. The kids were captivated! Kak Fadli used Bajang to explain these important messages and Bajang even asked the students questions to ensure they understood. All of them answered correctly—earning little prizes for their efforts!

What made this session even more impactful was GNI’s holistic approach. Just a week earlier, they hosted a session with parents, teachers, and local officials, linking the lessons learned in school with changes at home. This creates a powerful connection, encouraging everyone to work together to improve waste management.

Next, we’ll set up a plastic bank and a composting facility at the school. Children will be encouraged to bring their plastic waste to the plastic bank, which is part of a partnership with a local plastics recycler. The recycler will buy the plastics collected, and the school will earn money that can be used for books, school supplies, uniforms, or whatever the school community decides is most needed.

Thank you for your continued support of our Block Schools Program. Your generosity not only helps us build safe, sustainable schools but also allows us to offer programs like this that make a lasting impact on students, their families, and the planet.
