Work on slips at Ruamahunga finishes shortly

Recovery work at the large slip-site at Ruamahunga is nearing completion. While there is still some minor finishing touches to be done, the major work of clearing debris, installing soil nails and netting is now largely complete.

Tomorrow Thursday 13 June a helicopter will be on site to remove equipment and stores from the top of the site. This will mean a series of short road closures so the helicopter can operate safely.

Contractors are also continuing to clear debris from a new slip, including large tree roots, after a large tree fell 30 metres down the bank blocking the road for most of last Monday. The existing stop/go has been extended to incorporate this new slip location.

The team is working as quickly as possible, and may require some short road closures so this work can be done safely. Wet weather expected later this week could impact on work progress.

Once work at both sites is completed the road through this area, which has operated as a single lane since October 2023, will be restored to two lanes. This is expected to be within the next 2 weeks. Further temporary lane closures may be needed from time to time to accommodate additional works in this area.

Since the major repair work began in October last year, our contractors have removed about 2,500 tonnes of material from the slope predominantly by hand. They have installed more than 500 soil nails and approximately1500 square meters of mesh.

With much of the work being done from the top of the sheer slip-face, helicopters have been used regularly to help clear vegetation and deliver supplies and equipment the top of the worksite.

Soil nails and mesh has been installed to stabilise slipfaces at Ruamahunga.

Other recovery progress

Three more slip sites have been completed on State Highway 25 over the past month. Repairs to underslips at Te Kouma, Pumpkin Hill and Whiritoa Hill have now been finished and the highway restored to full width at these locations.

SH2 at Victoria Battery in the Karagahake Gorge is planned to be open to 2 lanes by Matariki weekend once work to build a retaining wall (pictured below) is completed.

Work is expected to begin before the end of the month to build a sea wall alongside the highway at Kuranui, north of Thames, and drainage repair and clearance is continuing between Waihi and Whiritoa.

Looking further ahead, work to repair highway damage near Kuaotunu, Pumpkin Hill and between Hikuai and Opoutere is expected to be underway from August.
