Local History: International Women's Day

This International Women's Day, read about some of the Waverley women who made a splash locally and globally in competitive swimming. Mina Wylie and Fanny Durack were the very first Australian women to compete in the Olympic Games and went on to win gold and silver at the Stockholm Games in 1912. Saturday 5 March, 6 pm, Sydney Cricket Ground Moore Park

ALIA is proud to sponsor the very first library industry entry into the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras 2022. Marchers will be  dressed as large, colourful and identifiable LGBTQI books. Books help to shine a light over our lives and our experiences. United we Shine is the theme of this year’s Mardi Gras Festival. Waverley Library staff members will be joining the parade, come and help us celebrate!

 
 
 
Ivy Richter, the owner of Chez Ivy

Local History: Mardi Gras

A mainstay in the queer community, Chez Ivy opened in 1962 on Oxford Street, Bondi Junction. Originally a combination coffee shop and wine bar, the owner Ivy Richter transformed the space into one of the earliest and most iconic queer venues in Sydney. The bar boasted a fish tank, a golden piano, silver grape vines and some of the earliest open drag performances in Sydney. Chez Ivy closed in 1972, but remains one of the enduring memories of the queer community of the 1960s and 70s. Book Babies & Story Time Fun

Starting Monday 14 March

The Children’s Library is excited to announce the return of our emergent literacy programs. Book babies introduces your babes in arms to the magic and joy of stories and rhymes while for those toddlers and preschool aged children Story Time Fun will capture their imaginations with stories and craft. Tickets will be released on Eventbrite each Friday the week before the programs. More information coming soon.
