Housing Climate challenge In Barnet, the biggest cause of climate change is housing. Homes emit around 50% of the carbon released in our borough. Radically reducing those emissions by upgrading the environmental performance of our homes is the most urgent and useful thing that many of us can do. It will also generate employment, substantially reduce our energy bills and – done properly –
improve our health. Over two thirds of Barnet’s housing stock was built before 1944, and over 85% of it is likely still to exist in 2050. Today, the energy efficiency of existing homes in Barnet is only about 56%. Improving their energy efficiency is therefore critical to achieving Net Zero. United for Warm Homes, is a campaign by Barnet Friends of the Earth it is petitioning MPs to ask them for: - Urgent support for people dealing with sky-high energy bills.
- A new emergency programme to insulate our homes.
- An energy system powered by cheap, green renewables.

Here are 7 ways you can reduce food waste in your kitchen:1. Take an inventory.Take stock of what you have in pantry, refrigerator and freezer to prevent overbuying. 2. Create a meal plan.Planning at least a few meals for each week is a great way to ensure you have healthy meals. It also stop you from buying too much food. 3. Save and eat leftovers safely. If you don't think you will be able to eat your leftover food or vegetables within three days, store them in a sealed box or securely wrap them, label them with the date and contents, and store in the freezer. If you can, buy only what you can eat in a week. 4. Store food
appropriately.Store greens with a paper towel in a plastic container in the bottom drawer of your fridge, tomatoes and bananas on the counter, potatoes and onions in a cool, dark place. Have some frozen fruits and vegetables handy if you need extra.
5. Buy "ugly" foods. Buying misshaped or oddly shaped fruits or vegetables, saves money and waste. 6. Compost. Even vegetable peels don't have to go to waste. Composting is a great way to keep food waste out of landfill and provide nutrition for your garden. 7. Use leftovers creatively. Find ways to use rather than toss food that isn't fresh. Vegetable scraps and peels can be made into soup stock. Experiment with using soups to help use up leftovers, You could start with this recipe from Romi Londre

Friary Park Flood Alleviation Scheme consultationThe council is the Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA) for the London Borough of Barnet. Barnet’s Local Flood Risk Management Strategy has identified the borough's top ten priority Critical Drainage Areas (CDAs). These are areas in
the borough which are at the highest risk of surface water flooding. They are consulting on a proposed Flood Alleviation Scheme in Friary Park. A small open watercourse, Blackett’s Brook, runs through Friary Park and gets culverted under Torrington Park. The proposed scheme is a natural flood management scheme which will create a series of flood storage interventions in the brook to hold back (store) flood flows in the park. Full details of the proposals can be found here They are keen to hear your views and encourage you to also have your say by
