1. Sludge problem resolved

Story
Story

Iron ochre – a think red sludge produced by iron-oxidising bacteria – is blocking underground drains on the expressway at Ruakura. To combat this, an extra drainage layer is being laid on the expressway – effectively raising the road surface by half a metre. This special drainage layer will keep the road pavement dry and direct water to swales on either side of the expressway.

2. Street lights installed

Street light installation is under way in the north and south. Lights are being installed at the Northern Interchange that ties in with the Ngaruawahia section of the expressway. The video shows an installation team working in the north. Street lights are also being installed at the Southern interchange at Tamahere.

3. Detours ahead for tie-in works

Tie-in works in the north will require two overnight detours for SH1 traffic this month. On Monday 19 April, all northbound traffic will be detoured from Horotiu to Taupiri between 7pm and 6am via Ngaruawahia. Then on Tuesday 20 April there will be a detour for all southbound traffic, from Taupiri to Horotiu, between 7pm and 6am. In the event of poor weather, work will be moved to the next suitable nights. The illustration below shows the detour route.

4. Borman Road closure ahead

A Rototuna intersection will be partly closed for two weeks as part of works on the Hamilton section of the Waikato Expressway. The western Borman Road exit/entry to the Resolution Drive roundabout will be closed over the school holidays from Sunday 18 April to Sunday 2 May. A detour will be signposted. Walking and cycling access will be maintained.
Resolution Drive is being extended from the roundabout to connect to the expressway’s Resolution Interchange. A 4m-deep drainage line needs to be laid under Borman Road at the roundabout. The illustration below shows the detour route.

5. Asphalt laid in the south

Asphalt – our final smooth surfacing material – is being laid at the Southern Interchange. Asphalt is laid hot – delivered straight from the manufacturing plant to our site. A key to producing long-lasting asphalt pavement is to lay continuous lengths with as few joins as possible. To achieve this, asphalt crews will at times operate day and night. Local residents will be notified before night works begin.
