Click here September 29, 2023 New Resources Tips and Leads and Threats to Life The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), along with the Global Advisory Committee (GAC) and the Criminal Intelligence Coordinating Council (CICC) is pleased to announce the release of the Tips and Leads and Threats to Life resource documents. The GAC through the CICC’s Tips and Leads and Threat to Life (TL-TTL) task teams developed resources to support the efficient and timely sharing of TL and TTL information originating from tip lines and social media platforms. These resources highlight the importance of coordination, collaboration, and streamlined information sharing among law enforcement entities and offer guidance and promising practices related to the proper handling of TLs and TTLs. The final set of documents revolve around the premise that responsible multidisciplinary information sharing will enhance stakeholders’ abilities to evaluate relevant data, identify and mitigate credible threats, and route the information to the entities that can provide appropriate support for individuals in need of assistance. The final package of documents includes: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Regional Nodes for TL-TTL Sharing Proposal Statewide School Safety Tip Lines All TL-TTL documents and resources were released during the recent Combined GAC-CICC meeting in Washington, DC. They are available at BJA’s Global Justice Information Sharing Toolkit website. New Publication Vehicular Pursuits—A Guide for Law Enforcement Executives on Managing Associated Risks Published by the Office of Community-Oriented Policing Services (COPS) and the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), in collaboration with the Police Executive Research Forum, this publication aims to help law enforcement agencies manage the risks of conducting and not conducting vehicular pursuits. The guide uses findings from NHTSA research and other credible institutions on crashes and collisions involving police pursuits as well as focusing group discussions and review of 48 agencies’ policies to provide safety information and model policies to encourage the development of safer vehicular pursuits. It includes 65 recommendations that agencies of all sizes and circumstances can consider to develop or refine their vehicular pursuit policies. Webinar Threats to Law Enforcement From Domestic Violent Extremism Hosted by the Justice Clearinghouse, this webinar is designed to provide law enforcement officers and criminal justice practitioners with the knowledge to identify early-warning indicators that an individual may be involved in extremist violent practices against law enforcement. Based on a database documenting hundreds of extremist attacks against law enforcement, the military, the courts, and other government entities, the presenters have developed training to help prepare criminal justice professionals for this increasingly problematic situation. When: Thursday, October 12, 2023 Webinar From Fentanyl Test Strips to Mass Spectrometry—A Case Study in Civilian Drug Checking Funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance and hosted by the Comprehensive Opioid, Stimulant, and Substance Use Program (COSSUP) and RTI International, the second webinar of our "Understanding the Changing Illicit Drug Landscape" series will highlight innovative drug-checking technologies that are used in response to the highly variable drug market. Carla Sofronski from the Pennsylvania Harm Reduction Network will discuss efforts to expand drug checking through syringe service and other harm reduction agencies. Nationally renowned ethnographer and journalist Christopher Moraff will discuss his efforts to introduce and expand the distribution of fentanyl test strips through Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s, Department of Public Health and provide an overview of his innovative blueprint for a statewide drug-checking network to respond to emerging drug trends. When: Thursday, October 5, 2023 NW3C Webinar Unveiling Domestic Partner Stalking—Empowering Victims and Investigating Crimes Part 1 Funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance and hosted by the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C), this webinar will delve into the challenges victims face in reporting crimes and how we can bridge the gaps in knowledge and understanding to better support them. In this webinar, we’ll explore the current threat landscape associated with domestic partner stalking and discuss phone apps and their potential for abuse. We’ll also discuss the crucial topic of analyzing victim mobile devices for artifacts of domestic partner stalking and how to use free and open-source utilities to aid investigators in gathering essential evidence during the investigative process.
