Your update from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency

Welcome to the November project update for the three Waka Kotahi intersection improvement projects in Northland being delivered as part of the regional package of the NZ Upgrade Programme. This newsletter provides regular news and information about the projects.

These projects address key challenges for our regional state highway networks, including safety risks, resilience and congestion problems, accessibility and travel time reliability. The projects also support regional economic development.

Approach to the new Puketona roundabout. Temporary SH10 operating out of shot (left), November 2020

New roundabout takes shape at Puketona

The outline and some features of the new roundabout are clearly visible now at the intersection of SH10 and SH11. Weather plays a role in the pace of our work and settled conditions recently have helped us make good progress. Steel safety barriers continue to separate highway traffic on temporary roading from workers and site activities.

We have scheduled some surfacing work for early December in order to make the roundabout operational for the Christmas and New Year break. Temporary safety measures (such as road cones) will be helping keep traffic moving safely during the holidays.

The emergency closure of SH1 in the Mangamuka Gorge is still having an impact on SH10 traffic volumes through the intersection. We continue to do our best to avoid contributing to travel delays at our work site.

If you have any concerns or queries about upcoming works, please call Mel Norris from Fulton Hogan on 0800 577 623. Road users can also contact Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency at any time on 0800 44 44 49.

Wooden panelling on the retaining wall at SH1 and SH11, November 2020

Hillside improvements at Kawakawa intersection

The Kawakawa intersection of SH1 and SH11 continues its transformation as panels on the new retaining wall begin to define the corner hillside. The wall and associated earthworks will increase the stability of the slope down to the state highway. Design work is being finalised on carved panels at the roundabout which will greatly improve the appearance and cultural status of the previously scrub-covered entrance to Kawakawa township.

The outline of the roundabout is now forming quickly behind our corner safety barriers. We have scheduled surfacing work for later this month so the new roundabout will be operational during the Christmas and New Year break. Temporary safety measures (such as road cones) will aid in keeping traffic moving safely throughout the holiday season.

If you have any concerns or queries about upcoming works, please call Mel Norris from Fulton Hogan on 0800 577 623. Road users can also contact Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency at any time on 0800 44 44 49.

SH12 and Rawene Road will be seeing safety improvements before Christmas

Rawene intersection part of safe system approach

Plans for the intersection of SH12 and Rawene Road include improving the road shoulder and installing sections of safety barrier along the state highway.

This work is part of our safe system approach aimed at reducing the risk of death and serious injury at state highway intersections.

Construction for the project is scheduled for December 2020.
