Radcliffe & Prestons now open to two-way traffic

The Prestons Road Bridge opened to two-way traffic today and Radcliffe Road Bridge opened yesterday. Trying to prepare and seal these bridges over winter has not been easy and it did take longer than expected.

We are sorry for that but delighted to have the Prestons detour in the past for everyone!

Starting this weekend - Gantry installation SH1

We are installing seven new gantries over SH1, starting on Sunday night 6 September and continuing on for 18 nights until Tuesday 6 October. This work will be done with either north or southbound traffic reduced to one lane or diverted via Main North Road between Groynes Drive and Ohoka Road.

On 30 September all motorway traffic (north and southbound) will be diverted.

The lane closures or diversions stay in place from 10pm till 5am. With lane reductions, lane closures and traffic diverted, movements will be slow, please expect delays at night.

When traffic is reduced to one lane, there will be a 60km/h speed limit in place. High winds or very poor weather could move or extend these dates.

The image below shows a gantry being installed over the new alignment yesterday.

The full night work schedule and project update is here.

Work on the Waimakariri Bridge going well

Work on the Waimakariri Bridge has gone very well this week. The old seal has been removed and repairs to the bridge deck, abutments and expansion joints are on the go.

Shifting southbound traffic to the new inner bridge lanes went very well and drivers have been doing a great job of navigating the new set-up with few issues. Traffic delays in the morning peak have been as expected or better - considering the first few days of a new traffic layout are usually the worst, this is good news for all.

To help manage the peak time traffic flows on SH1, we will continue to close Tram Road on-ramp on weekdays over the morning peak (from about 5.30am – 9.30am depending on traffic flows) as this will help to get everyone through quicker.

More detail on this work is available here

QEII Drive shift to westbound lanes and Philpotts open left-in left-out

We have nearly finished the QEII Drive upgrade. Westbound traffic, between Innes Road roundabout and Winters Road, has been shifted this week onto the newly upgraded lanes. Please take care as the traffic layout is different.

While the new westbound lanes on QEII Drive have looked ready for traffic for a while, we could only move traffic to these lanes once we had some warmer drier weather, that would allow the chip seal layer to warm up and bed in. All going well with the bedding in, early next week we will complete our work at Philpotts Road and open this road to its final lay out, left in and out only from QEII Drive.
