Safety improvements underway
2024 will be a big year of road safety progress in Taranaki as NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi delivers a range of improvements along State Highway 3 between New Plymouth and Hāwera.
As shown in the map below, flexible median barriers and wide centrelines are to be installed at numerous locations between the region's two largest centres.
Contractors are busy completing a 2.65km stretch of barriers just north of Normanby. Following this, crews will move north to deliver barriers at sites between Stratford and Inglewood.
Over the next five to six years, the New Plymouth to Hāwera Safety Improvements Project aims to install more than 40km of safety improvements, including median barriers, roundabouts, turning facilities, wide centrelines and intersection speed zones.
"Our goal is to significantly increase safety for everyone while working with local residents and businesses to limit any negative impacts," says Project Manager Sree Nutulapati.
Following preliminary works, contractors will begin the construction of a roundabout at Mangorei Road, New Plymouth later this year, as well as resuming work at Junction Street, New Plymouth where an intersection speed zone will be installed and a southbound passing lane removed.
Detailed design of a roundabout at Egmont Village is also underway.
The New Plymouth to Hāwera project also encompasses SH3A where plans are being drawn up to widen the centreline, creating more distance between passing vehicles.
