Faculty Advisors: Anti-Black Racism and Black Inclusion

Professors Audra A. Diptée (History) and Nduka Otiono (African Studies) have recently been appointed as Faculty Advisors on Anti-Black Racism and Black Inclusion.
 
Drs. Diptée and Otiono will collaborate with senior leaders on initiatives such as:

• Increasing Black representation
• Fostering a sense of belonging and supporting Black student excellence
• Enhancing Black Studies curriculum and pedagogy
• Increasing training opportunities against anti-Black racism

New Course: How to be a University Student

    The Centre for Initiatives in Education is pleased to present a five-day course for incoming students who want a strong start in their university studies. 

    “How to be a University Student” offers a mix of lectures, readings, and workshops to help students develop strong academic skills and habits. This non-credit course will be held in-person from August 22 to August 26.

    Registration opened with time tickets in July, and students can enrol through Carleton Central, as they would a credit course (the fee is $250 including HST).

    Madeleine Bourdages

    PhD Candidate Awarded Canadian Northern Studies Trust Scholarship

    Congratulations to PhD candidate Madelaine Bourdages on being awarded the Canadian Northern Studies Trust Scholarship from the Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Studies Program.

    Bourdages’ award-winning project is titled, “Sources, Transport and Fate of Microplastic Pollution Along the Mackenzie River from Great Slave Lake to the Southern Beaufort Sea, Northwest Territories.”

    Professor Jacob Kovalio

    History Professor Conferred Order of the Rising Sun

    On June 23rd, Professor Jacob Kovalio (History) was conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette at a ceremony hosted by the Ambassador of Japan to Canada, HE Yamanouchi Kanji. 

    Dr. Kovalio earned the medal for his contribution to the enhancement of the knowledge of Japan’s history and culture among Canadians, as well as to the strengthening of Canadian-Japanese relations.

    Dr. Kovalio has taught at Carleton since 1987, winning three Excellence in Teaching awards.

    Professor Laura Banducci

    Dr. Laura Banducci wins Early Researcher Award

      Congratulations to Professor Laura Banducci (Greek and Roman Studies), one of three Carleton University researchers to receive an Early Researcher Award (ERA) for their ongoing research projects.

      The ERA is administered by the Province of Ontario to help promising, recently-appointed Ontario researchers build their research teams of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and research associates.

      Registration is open for the Fall 2022 cohort of the Kinàmàgawin Indigenous Learning Certificate

      Registration for Kinàmàgawin Indigenous Learning Certificate

      Registration is open for the Fall 2022 cohort of the Kinàmàgawin Indigenous Learning Certificate. 

      This series is comprised of four three-hour workshops (1 to 4 p.m.) covering the following topics: anti-Indigenous racism in Canada, institutional anti-indigenous racism and education, Indigenous student experiences and the Centre for Indigenous Support and Community Engagement, and practicing allyship and righting relations. 

      There are a several cohort dates and times. To register for this certificate, please head to the "Learning and Professional Development" section on Carleton Central.

      Shannon Lectures in History

      The Shannon Lectures in History successfully wrapped up their series on July 8. You can watch the lectures here.

      The 2022 Spring Series’ theme, “The Management of Natural Resources and the Environment in Canada: Historical and Transnational Perspectives," intersected with the research of its convenor, History Ph.D. candidate Stephen Osei-Owusu.

      FASS spoke with Osei-Owusu to learn more about his research and his involvement in the Shannons.

      CUAG Summer Gatherings

        The Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG) invites you to Gatherings, a series of performances, workshops, and walks taking place this summer.
        These events are free and in-person, and take place on unceded, unsurrendered Algonquin territory. 

        July events include:

        • Sketch & Stretch with Corinne Blouin (July 14, August 4, and August 18 at 7:00 PM EST, the Arboretum)
        • Collage Party with FEZA and DJ Celestial (August 19 at 8:00 PM EST, Happy Goat Coffee Co.)
        • Medicine Walk with Louella Tobias (August 25 at 2:00 PM EST, Dow’s Lake)

        The FASS Framework

        The FASS Framework guides prospective and current students on their academic journeys in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and reflects the foundational cross-disciplinary areas of interest that get to the heart of what our community of students, researchers, educators, and administrators care about most.

        The four "frames" that make up the FASS Framework are: Identities, Communities and Social Justice, Mental Health and the Mind, Sustainable Futures, and the Power of Creative Expression.
