This past month has been filled with vibrant collaboration and community building. Highlights included the uplifting acts of kindness during Mitzvah Day, the inspiring discussions at the Barnet Multi Faith Forum’s Celebrating Oneness event, and the Community Forum’s refugee and asylum seeker workshops. Together, these moments showcased the VCFSE sector's unwavering commitment to inclusivity and growing community power across Barnet.

Across our diverse neighbourhoods, Inclusion Barnet has supported dozens of members with personalised 1:1 consultations, funding guidance, governance advice, and strategic support. These efforts are central to strengthening Barnet’s community organisations.

Highlights included:

• Attending a meeting to address health inequalities in Barnet’s Roma, Gypsy, and Traveller communities.

• Attending Grahame Park health and wellbeing forum, Borough of Sanctuary, and Dementia-friendly Barnet meetings.

• Leadership development at Volunteering Barnet’s Exploring Trusteeship Training, with valuable insights from COST member development officer, Sukhjeen.

• Empowering Disabled people and their allies in the VCFSE sector by enhancing autism awareness at the Barnet Together training session.

• Fariha and Bryn attending a groundbreaking research project with the Barnet Community Forum and Middlesex University, focusing on migrant health inequalities.

• Collaborating with local sports clubs, craft makers, and community activists to strengthen capacity in underprivileged neighbourhoods in Barnet

In addition, by representing you on a wide range of community boards across the borough, we harness the power of advocacy to amplify voices, address local needs, and drive meaningful change.

Exploring Trusteeship: insights from the event

As part of our ongoing collaboration within the Barnet Together partnership, last month Sukhjeen from the Inclusion Barnet team attended a thought-provoking trusteeship event hosted online by Volunteering Barnet.

The session offered a comprehensive exploration of what it means to be a trustee, covering key topics such as the roles and responsibilities associated with trusteeship, the legal and ethical duties trustees uphold, and the eligibility criteria for those interested in stepping into this vital role.

Sukhjeen also contributed her expertise by sharing practical tips and firsthand experiences, providing attendees with valuable guidance on navigating the trustee journey. From understanding governance to balancing oversight with strategic input, the event highlighted the pivotal role trustees play in strengthening organisations and driving positive community impact.

This session not only equipped participants with essential knowledge but also inspired meaningful discussions about leadership and collaboration within Barnet’s thriving voluntary sector.

Mitzvah Day: kindness and community action

Mitzvah Day 2024 in Barnet was a shining example of how small acts of kindness can create ripple effects of positivity throughout the community. Rooted in the Jewish tradition of tikkun olam—the concept of repairing the world—Mitzvah Day invites people from all backgrounds and beliefs to come together at events and participate in meaningful, hands-on social action projects.

What made Mitzvah Day in Barnet particularly special this year was the collaboration between faith and non-faith groups. By working side by side, individuals from diverse backgrounds celebrated shared values and built lasting connections. This inclusive approach not only addressed immediate challenges but also strengthened the fabric of our community, fostering mutual respect and understanding.

The atmosphere at events Barnet Together activists attended was one of energy, enthusiasm, and togetherness, as we all contributed in different ways to create a positive impact. Mitzvah Day 2024 reminded us of the importance of unity in diversity, and its success stands as a testament to the idea that we truly are Stronger Together.

This year’s participation reaffirmed our commitment to social action and inspired us to continue working collaboratively to build a more connected, compassionate society.

VCFSE Ukrainian Refugee Support Grant

The VCFSE Ukrainian Refugee Support Grant aims to enhance outreach and engagement for supporting Ukrainian refugees in Barnet. 9. Tall Roots Bursaries for Aspiring CEOs

Provides bursaries for individuals from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds pursuing the Bayes Third Sector CEO course.

10. Trust for London

The Trust for London new strategy focusses on economic and social justice.

The economic objectives include:

Promoting decent work,

Addressing the housing crisis,

Enhancing social security, and

Eliminating the poverty premium.

In terms of justice, their goals are to end migrant destitution, promote racial equality, and support disability rights.

This funding opportunity is aimed at small to medium-sized organisations in London with annual expenditures below £2 million that are dedicated to eradicating poverty and inequality.

Being a registered charity is not a requirement. Grants can extend up to five years with an annual range typically between £40,000 and £80,000. Recipients are advised to allocate 40%-50% of the funding towards advisory services while core expenses will be covered by the grant.

Changes to Council Tax Support Scheme 2025-26

What you need to know

The Council is consulting on proposed changes to its Council Tax Support Scheme for 2025-26, which could impact some of the residents currently receiving assistance. These changes are part of a broader effort to reassess eligibility and allocation criteria for support. Here’s what you need to know:

Who may be affected

Under the proposed changes, working-age residents who currently receive council tax support will see adjustments in their eligibility. The most significant impact will be felt by a small percentage of these residents.

• Affected population:
  Out of the 18,000 working-age residents currently eligible for the scheme, 254 people will no longer qualify for assistance starting in April 2025.

Who is not affected

• Pensioners are entirely exempt from these changes and will continue to receive support under the existing terms.

Understanding the impact

While the majority of working-age claimants will remain eligible, the proposed scheme introduces stricter criteria that may disqualify some individuals. This highlights the importance of reviewing the consultation details to understand how the changes could affect your circumstances.

Maxability, a cherished member of the Barnet Together network, is seeking two dedicated trustees to join its Board. This is an opportunity to contribute to a charity that has been enhancing the lives of Disabled adults in Barnet through creativity and inclusion.

About Maxability

Founded in 2009 by Anita and Emile Woolf, the charity’s mission is to enable participants to explore their creative potential through inclusive ceramics classes.

Operating from a fully equipped pottery studio at the Flightways Centre near Colindale, Maxability offers a supportive and caring environment where participants can express themselves, build confidence, and connect with others. Since its founding, Maxability has been a beacon of creativity and inclusion in the community.

Trustee roles

Maxability is currently recruiting two new trustees to join its Board. Trustees will:
