Fellowship program in the Legal Humanities Application Deadline

Host: The Collegium Institute
The program welcomes a small group of fellows to participate in six seminar-style discussion sessions. The discussions will be facilitated by academics and professionals in law, history, and philosophy. This semester's
module, Legal Humanities: Foundations and New Frontiers, will cultivate reflection on the Legal Humanities project as a whole: How can law — its substance and practice — help us to become more fully human? What might happenif legal structures and institutions were envisioned as instruments not only for justice but also for mercy and forgiveness, reconciliation and community?

Can the News be Fixed?
Host: The Collegium Institute
Join special guest facilitator Prof. Peter Wicks for the first Food for Thought module of 2021: a series of discussions about how to read the news critically
and how to think about how much attention we should be paying to the news in the first place. Food for Thought is an informal dinner seminar where students engage fundamental questions in community without the stress of grades or papers. It provides an opportunity to read and discuss some of the most influential and provocative thinkers of the past and present.

Water Exchange Speaker Series
Host: The Water Center
South Africa’s second most populous city, Cape Town recently almost ran out of water in the infamous “day zero” due to the combination of an ever growing demand, a supply reliant solely on rainwater and a one in 600 year drought. The city recently released a Water Strategy that puts forward a plan to become “water resilient” along with a number of other reforms to improve water and sanitation services. Michael Webster, head of Cape Town’s water department will present this plan and the way forward to a water secure future for Cape Town Water. Contact: watercenter@sas.upenn.edu for more information.

Distinguished scholars and father and daughter Dr. Henry Louis Taylor and Dr. Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor join us for the hallmark program for the University of Pennsylvania’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Symposium on Social Change. They will share their perspectives on past, current and future changes in the movements for social justice, anti-racism, and equity, particularly as they impact BIPOC communities, as part of Penn's annual celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Contact: ritaa@upenn.edu for more information.

The Public Health System: Health and Wellness Policies

Continuing the conversation on Racism and Anti-Racism in Contemporary America, this panel discussion will focus on health and wellness policies. Three central questions will be addressed: What is the current state of racial disparity regarding the topic? What are the root causes of this disparity? How has or might this disparity be best addressed? Join us on January 27 from 5 - 6:15pm.
