Metro newsUN partnership with MWRRG: a training boost to lead Victoria towards a circular economyIn a global first, MWRRG has secured a partnership with the United Nations System Staff College to train up to 200 people to become circular economy leaders and help Victoria meet its Recycling Victoria: a new economy targets. As announced by the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio, we are bringing a six week course to Victoria to help build knowledge, expertise and leadership in councils, community organisations and the waste and resource recovery sector. Circular Economy Bill passes lower houseMWRRG welcomes the progress of the Circular Economy (Waste Reduction and Recycling) Bill 2021, which was passed in the Legislative Assembly on 18 November. The Bill will see Recycling Victoria established as a business unit within the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning from 1 July 2022. Advanced waste processing request for tender issuedThe South east metropolitan advanced waste processing procurement has reached a major milestone with the release of the first request for tender documents. The three shortlisted respondents—Orbis Energy, Sacyr Environment Australia and Veolia Environmental Services Australia—will receive the full package of tender documents in a staged release. Portfolio news Resources for councils to communicate about recycling items loose, not in bagsTo reduce contamination in household recycling bins and increase waste recovery, Sustainability Victoria is running an eight week campaign from 31 October to 31 December 2021 targeting the problem of people putting recycling in plastic bags. The campaign encourages Victorians to ‘put their recycling in the bin loose, not in bags’. A range of materials are available to help councils promote the campaign through their communication channels. Download the resources from SV’s campaign asset library. Consultation opens on draft standard lists for four stream waste servicesPublic consultation is now open on draft standard lists for four stream household waste and recycling services, to be rolled out across Victoria. The draft lists were developed by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), in consultation with industry, councils, peak bodies, and other relevant organisations. DELWP is now asking Victorians to provide feedback on the draft lists. Read the draft lists and provide feedback via the Engage Vic website. Consultation closes 5 January 2022. CDS scheme co-ordinator and network operator roles open for applicationsInterested in helping to run Victoria’s container deposit scheme (CDS)? Expressions of interest (EOI) in the CDS scheme co-ordinator and network operator roles are open now until 23 December 2021. The scheme co-ordinator will manage the administration and finance, while the network operators will run the collection and refund points. The EOI is open to any metropolitan or regional business or joint venture, including social enterprises, not for profits and charities who can demonstrate they can deliver a world class CDS. For more information, visit: www.vic.gov.au/container-deposit-scheme Funding to boost Victoria’s organics, textile and glass recyclingMinister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio has announced funding for six projects under the Recycling Victoria Infrastructure Fund. Funded projects include a glass processing facility in West Melbourne, a circular textile production facility in Dandenong and new processing infrastructure to support the roll out of food and green waste recycling. In total, the projects will process more than 436,000 tonnes of food and green waste, 20,000 tonnes of glass and 40,000 tonnes of textiles each year and will leverage $24.4 million of industry investment in Victoria’s recycling infrastructure. The program will recycle e-waste onshore, at room temperature—rather than being sent offshore to be recycled in smelters. Our new animation can be used by councils on websites, on social media and at community events. The animation shows how the most common type of advanced waste processing—waste to energy—works.
