Hutt Community Secret Santa: Spreading Christmas Magic with Local Business Support
Hutt Community Secret Santa has been facilitating Christmas presents for children who may otherwise miss out on celebrating since 2019. This year, they are working with local businesses to try to spread some Christmas magic to the Lower Hutt community. They are proud of the generosity small businesses have shown. Donations of wrapped treats, books and homemade cards may be all some children are able to get this year. As well as being a worthy cause, donating to them may have some marketing benefits. They have a Shop For Good campaign, asking their santas to support the businesses that support them. Hutt Community Secret Santa can provide heartfelt endorsements and a certificate to display. They want to maximise the community potential of this project by creating a circular economy wherein small businesses that support the Secret Santa are supported by their santas. Many customers are overwhelmed with Christmas shopping so they will create a shopping guide highlighting supportive businesses. Wellington Water Update: Odour Reduction and Plant Maintenance
Wellington Water is continuing efforts to reduce odour levels and restore the plant to normal operations following sludge dryer outages. During routine maintenance, a fault was found in a fan component, which required the dryer to be offline briefly for repairs. Daily monitoring shows that, despite elevated sludge levels, the treatment process remains stable.
Wellington Water appreciates the impact of odour on residents and businesses and assures the community they are working diligently to address the issue. Thank you for your patience as they work toward stabilising the plant.
Moa Point Wastewater Treatment Plant refurbishment work underway
Wellington Water, in partnership with Wellington City Council, is continuing essential maintenance and refurbishment at the Moa Point Wastewater Treatment Plant to enhance performance and protect the environment. Serving approximately 180,000 residents, this work is part of a programme to upgrade aging infrastructure, ensuring the plant’s long-term efficiency and reliability.
The project includes:
- Refurbishing and replacing key components in the clarifier tanks, which are crucial for separating sludge from wastewater.
- Replacing pipes at the plant’s inlet pump station, which transports wastewater to the plant.
During this work, the plant’s capacity will be temporarily reduced, and increased rainfall may raise the risk of untreated wastewater discharge. However, Wellington Water has scheduled the work for drier months to minimise environmental impacts and improve the plant's resilience.
Jeremy McKibbin, Wellington Water’s Group Manager, highlights the commitment to protecting Wellington’s waterways and community: “This work is essential for maintaining the health of our water systems and reducing future discharge risks.”
