How much money should I have in savings for emergencies?

Three to six months of living expenses is recommended for an emergency fund. If you are part of a single income household, lean toward 6 months. For a dual income household, 3 months of living expenses is generally sufficient. Consider keeping your emergency fund at an online bank so that it earns more in interest and is separate from your bill paying accounts.
