Ōtaki shared pathway nearing completion
We’re pleased to let you know work on the new shared path through Ōtaki is nearing completion.
This is part of and funded through the wider Peka Peka to Ōtaki (PP2Ō) Expressway project and was advocated for by so many in the community.
Once finished, this section will help provide safer walking and cycling mode choices, while better connecting Ōtaki with the rest of the Kāpiti Coast.
What's happening, what's coming up:
-
Construction of the southern section of the path is finished. There is some final lane remarking to be done for the right turn holding bay on the old State Highway opposite Waerenga Road.
There is also a small amount of additional work by the bridge to tie the path in with Riverbank Road and some minor planting and landscaping work still to complete. This will progress over the coming weeks.
-
At the northern end, there is ongoing work to finish a retaining wall north of Waitohu Valley Road. We also have some final drainage work and landscaping to complete at the corner of old SH1 and Te Manuao Road.
-
Looking ahead, the final part of the shared path project will be the installation of two clip-ons (one for the old Ōtaki River bridge and another for the Waitohu Stream Bridge). This is currently estimated to begin in May 2024.
It is still too early to confirm exactly what the traffic management will look like, but the project team is working to explore a range of installation options that allow the project to proceed quickly, manage flood risks, keep workers safe and to keep the traffic flowing as much as possible.
Keep in mind we will need to close one lane of the bridge under a stop/go set up at times, as some parts of the job requires work to be completed from the bridge deck. You'll still be able to travel in both directions, but there may be some delays.
We'll make sure to let you know what the plan is well ahead of work starting.
