Final surfacing work almost done

With the motorway opening in stages since June 2020 - we are pleased to let you know - the end of final surfacing works is now in sight.

Weather permitting, we expect construction to be complete around the end of April.

Late last week, the laying of low-noise asphalt was completed so construction activity and noise at night will have reduced. The big trucks, rollers and mills are now behind us.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during construction, particularly neighbours and residents close to the project.

Line-marking work will continue until the end of April, weather dependent. This work is far less disruptive and there will be fewer night shifts. However, it is still necessary to please follow all the site signage and drive to the conditions through active work areas.

Our frequently asked questions page on the website is kept up-to-date and you can continue to stay in touch via the project email csm2@nzta.govt.nz with any comments, feedback or concerns.

It is great to see and hear from drivers gaining confidence with the new road layout and noticing the benefits.

What's next for the southern corridor?

In the next few months, initial plans for intersection safety upgrades (between Rolleston Drive North and Walkers Road/Dunns Crossing), rail corridor improvements and a multi-modal flyover (between Rolleston Drive and Hoskyns Road) will be shared with the community for feedback.

The project has been allocated $60M funding by the Government as part of the New Zealand Upgrade Programme, which is investing $6.8 billion to get our cities and regions moving, save lives and boost productivity in growth areas.

Construction work is expected to start in 2024 and continue through to 2026. The project is part of the wider 30-year programme of transport improvements planned for the Rolleston area.
