Milestones for 2020

We have made significant progress this year on Penlink after decades of work on the project. It’s encouraging to see continuing strong support for Penlink which is now funded by the Government’s New Zealand Upgrade Programme.

In the past several months, we started working together with partners, stakeholders and the community to understand their views and to provide project updates. 2021 will be another exciting year as the project moves closer to construction.

Here is some of the work we have already completed:

Appointment of GHD as Technical Advisor

We are delighted to announce that GHD has been appointed as the Technical Advisor for Penlink. GHD has more than 90 years of experience in infrastructure design in NZ and internationally.

GHD will assess key features of the Penlink design including the scope of futureproofing, the location of the shared path and the interface design for local road connections.

They will also help us complete tender requirements for the final design process and construction. We certainly look forward to working with GHD as we develop this world-class infrastructure project.

Please read the media release for more information.

Meet the fernbird

Matata or fernbirds, usually live in dense wetland vegetation and are more often heard than seen because of their excellent camouflage and limited ability to fly.

They tend to scramble through dense vegetation searching for insects and because of this, often look a little scruffy with feathers out of place.

Fernbird numbers have declined considerably due to the increasing number of wetlands being drained, so it was heartening for the environmental monitoring team to hear fernbird calls in some of the wetland areas that have formed since pine tree harvesting

Cultural and Environmental Design Framework

Mana whenua have strong spiritual and cultural connections to the Penlink corridor and its surroundings. Waka Kotahi values their kaitiakitanga and ensures Te Triti O Waitangi obligations and responsibilities to the land and its natural resources through strong partnerships.

Waka Kotahi and iwi groups with rohe in the area are working together to develop a Cultural and Environmental Design Framework. The purpose of this overarching document is to provide the cultural and environmental principles of the Penlink project. The document identifies design challenges and opportunities that inform the project and support progress.

The final framework will be available in mid-2021 on the Penlink website.

The iwi groups involved in this partnership are:

• Te Kawerau ā Maki
• Ngāti Manuhiri
• Ngāti Maru
• Ngāti Pāoa Iwi Trust
• Ngāti Pāoa Trust Board
• Ngāti Whanaunga
• Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara
• Te Patukirikiri
• Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua.
