Easter

At 2pm on Easter Sunday 1898, the largest funeral Sydney had ever seen took place in Waverley Cemetery. The reburial of Michael and Mary Dwyer was marked by the laying of the foundation stone of 1798 Memorial. Known as the Wicklow Chief, Michael Dwyer was a key character in the 1798 Rising in Wexford, and was sent as a state prisoner to Australia in 1806. The completed monument was opened on Easter Sunday 1900, in "loving memory of all who dared and suffered in Ireland in 1798".

Over $50,000 in prize money on offer in 2023!

Waverley Council is delighted to announce that the prize money for the Mark and Evette Moran Nib Literary Award, Council’s annual celebration of the best in Australian writing, has doubled to $40,000 thanks to an ongoing multiyear commitment by the award’s principal sponsors, Mark and Evette Moran. In the spirit of supporting and encouraging Australian writers, the Council has also increased the People’s Choice Prize to $4000 and will be offering six shortlist prizes of $1,500 each. Nominations are now open for the 2023 award, for written works first published between 1 July 2022 – 30 June 2023. Writers of all levels and genres are encouraged to enter.

A Little Bit of Blue

 A Little Bit of Blue is an interactive detective show for families, told with puppetry. As well as helping to unravel a mystery, the audience will learn about the extraordinary habits of the Australian Satin Bowerbird, and why they are so fascinated by the colour blue. Stay around after the show to meet the puppeteer and to make a bower in the Pavilion garden!
