2022 Carers Conference - Save the Date

Carers WA is pleased to announce that the Carers WA Conference will be returning from Thursday 13 - Friday 14 October 2022.

This two-day conference is WA’s premier event leading into, and celebrating, National Carers Week. The program will explore common trends and challenges related to the changing landscape of caring within WA, from the perspective of industry professionals and carers.

We look forward to the launch of registrations for this year’s event on Friday, 1 July 2022.

Seeing Yourself - Carer Wellness Workshop

Carers WA presents “Seeing Yourself", a unique and informative workshop for carers who may be experiencing challenges in their lives and caring roles.

The workshop assists you to see yourself with more clarity. It will support you in building an understating of how to look after yourself in your day to day life and caring role. This course aims to lift you out of the “stuckness” we fall into at times.

Where: Conference Room | Joondalup Lotteries House | 70 Davidson Terrace, Joondalup 6027.

When: Monday, 16th May 2022 | 10.00am - 12.00pm (Please arrive at 9.45am for registration. A complimentary light lunch will be provided).

Amazing Mindfulness - Painting Workshop

Carers WA invites you take part in our Amazing Mindfulness Painting class. Experience a morning of connecting with other like-minded carers while you enjoy a fun class putting your creativity to the test.

Create a colourful masterpiece as Kathryn Stanley-Hart guides you through the process step-by-step. Places are limited.

Where: Classroom 7 Midland Junction Arts Centre| 276 Great Eastern Highway, Midland.

When: Tuesday, 24th May 2022 | 9.30am - 12.00pm (Please arrive at 9.15am for a 9.30am start. A complimentary light lunch will be provided).

Understanding Dementia

This session provides an introduction to dementia including an overview of different types of dementia, diagnosis, planning ahead and how to support someone living with dementia.

You will gain knowledge in:
- types of dementia, signs and symptoms
- the experience of living with dementia
- available services and where to access support.

Where: Cockburn Health and Community Facility, Level 1 Community Room | 11 Wentworth Parade, Success.

When: Thursday, 9th June 2022 | 10.00am - 12.00pm (Please arrive at 9.45am for a 10am start. A complimentary light lunch will be provided).

Carers Connect

Are you looking for support to start education or employment?

Carers WA has been successful in securing a second round of funding for the Carers Connect to Education and Employment project, through the Department of Social Services. This program will be delivered by Carers WA in partnership with the Australian Medical Association.

Carers Connect provides an opportunity for carers to study and/or gain employment in the Care Industry (e.g Aged Care, Community Service, Disability, Health Care and Mental Health) or another industry with skill shortages.

The Carers Connect Team will provide one-on-one coaching to help you to identify skills and overcome barriers, and financial assistance to enrol in training and support you to achieve your career goals.

To be eligible for this program, carers must be:
- In a caring role within the last two years.
- Aged between 16 – 65 years.
- Currently unemployed or under-employed.
- Interested in gaining a career in the Care Industry, or any other industry with skill shortages.

We highly encourage young carers and regional carers to apply.

Arts and Leisure Activities for Children

What is the project about? Researchers from the Curtin Autism Research Group are investigating the participation of children with and without disabiliy in arts and leisure activities and their potential barriers, and facilitators to participation.

Who can participate?
Parents or carers of children with and without physical/cognitive/ developmental/mental/behavioural conditions aged 4 - 12 years.

Accessibility of Community Arts Events for Children

What is the project about? Researchers from the Curtin Autism Research Group are investigating the barriers and facilitators for children with physical/cognitive/developmental/ mental/behavioural conditions accessing community arts events.

Who can participate?
Parents or carers of children with physical/cognitive/developmental/ mental/behavioural conditions aged 0 - 12 years.

Being both a carer and maintaining employment can be a difficult juggle. Ensuring carers feel acknowledged and safe within workplaces is not only essential to carer wellbeing but is crucial for staff retention and a positive company culture.

Lived Experience Australia national webinar on Young Carers

Meet Catarina, she is a young carer aged 25. Having taken on a caring role in the past, her ability to discuss lived experiences was invaluable at the recent national webinar in April.

Alongside Catarina, the Carers WA Young Carer team who took part in a panel discussion explored:
- how to identify and talk about young carers,
- the impact of being a young carer,
- the supports and resources available to them,
- and highlight the need for systemic advocacy for this under-represented yet admirable group of individuals.

Federal Budget 2022-23

Federal Budget - What it means for Carers

You can now access an overview of the 2022-23 Federal Budget measures that may affect carers. The report summarises the impacts of the budget in the areas of mental health, disability support, social security, aged care, dementia care, employment and training, access to medications and the reposnose to COVID-19.

Pen Pal Program 

Carers WA and Carers UK are looking for more people to join the exciting Pen Pal and Pen Partner programs. This program has been revived and re-designed to promote and encourage carer connections, peer support, friendships and literacy.
