SH2 Ngauranga to Featherston speed review project update
19 August 2024

Completion of SH2/Hebden Crescent intersection safety improvements

We’re pleased to advise that the safety improvement work at the two State Highway 2 (SH2)/Hebden Crescent intersections in the Hutt Valley is now complete. Despite some weather disruptions, the work has been completed largely on schedule.

As a result of the work, two intersections with poor safety records are now safer, while avoiding changes that would cause congestion or delays for the majority of SH2 users.

The Hebden Crescent intersection by Liverton Road has been converted to allow left-hand turns in and out, only. The ability to turn right has been removed and the median barrier extended to make it continuous.  The intersection at Hebden Crescent near Owen Street has been closed to vehicles and road users will use Hebden Crescent by Liverton Road, or the Haywards Interchange for access.

Whilst the work will improve safety and avoid causing congestion on this section of SH2, the changes have impacted journeys for local residents and businesses. As with any work of this nature, we will continue to monitor its impact and will consider any actions that might be necessary should any new, unforeseen issues be identified.

Although the work at both intersections is complete, there is some remaining signage on Hebden Crescent and SH2 that will be installed over the coming weeks.

Update on SH2/Moonshine Hill Road intersection safety improvements

Our work on the proposed upgrade to the Moonshine Hill Road/SH2 intersection remain paused. We continue to work through the implications of the Government Priority Statement and the proposed new Speed Management Rule, which will change the rules that govern how speed limits are set.

Both impact the proposed upgrade and will influence any decisions on the next steps for the intersection. We will keep the community updated on next steps as soon as we have new information.

Completion of Remutaka Hill safety improvements

Travelling over the Remutaka Hill is now safer with the new infrastructure improvements completed in June, as scheduled.

New side barriers have been installed at high-risk locations along the hill, as well as further motorcycle under-barriers, to improve safety for motorcyclists. Safety improvements also include the replacement of passing lanes with slow vehicle lanes, as well as improved road signage and markings.

The work was conducted as part of the scheduled night closures, alongside other planned maintenance work, to minimise disruption for people travelling over the hill.

Ongoing maintenance work to keep the section of highway over the hill safe and operational will continue. For the latest information about the proposed night closures, visit the SH2 Remutaka Hill road night closures webpage.
