Bombay Interchange signalisationConstruction update |
11 October 2024 |
Construction update | He pānuiKia ora Construction on the new traffic lights at Bombay Interchange kicked off on the night of Sunday 8 September. As you can see in the photo above, project boards were put up on Mill Road each side of the interchange to 'signal' the works now underway, which are expected to be completed at the end of February next year. Our work first started at the Bombay service centre exit on Mill Road. Crews have made good progress on the underground ducting work around this point, including pouring a new concrete exit last week. Some of our activities over the past month are captured in the photos below, including the delivery of portable offices near the construction site. To minimise traffic disruption, most of our construction work is being carried out at night. Even so, there are still stop/go traffic controls required and in place to manage overnight traffic movements from both directions. Once the traffic lights are up and running, they will provide immediate safety benefits for motorists using the interchange and the service centre, especially for those wanting to turn right onto Mill Road from the off-ramps or service centre. The lights will also allow us to manage the queues on the southbound off-ramp to prevent them backing up onto the motorway at peak times and causing safety issues there. |

Two portable offices have been setup near the construction site for project use. |

Hydro-excavation is undertaken to locate and identify existing underground services so they can be avoided (or moved if needed). |

At left, a trench has been dug out ready for utility (power) ducts to be laid along the front of the BP service station. At right, the crew then compacted the soil back with a plate compactor after the ducts were in. |

At left, a concrete saw cutting concrete for removal of the second half of the Bombay service centre exit while the new concrete on the first half cures. At right, all concreting works are completed and the exit is fully open. |

Looking ahead | E haere ake neiOctober is shaping up to be another busy month for the team as our works move closer to the interchange itself. This will inevitably require off-ramp closures to ensure the safety of our crew while they are working. We've recently started installing new underground utility ducts alongside the northbound off-ramp earlier this week. During any ramp closures, detour routes will be put in place and will be well signposted. Later in the month, we will continue installing new utility ducts around the interchange, including across and beside both the northbound and southbound off-ramps. |
