SH1C Cobham Drive-Cambridge Road intersection improvements

On the home stretch

The upgrade of State Highway is now on the home stretch, with the construction team moving on to the final stage of the project.

This means a number of major milestones are close to completion, including the water and wastewater mains work undertaken by Hamilton City Council within the State Highway section of the site.

The electrical work is also nearly complete, including the undergrounding of the power cables and removing the old overhead lines and installing the traffic loops and signal box which will control the traffic lights at the intersection of Cobham Drive and Cambridge Road.

What's next?

Over August the project team will be moving on to completing the reconstruction and resurfacing of the road. The new traffic islands will be built and all the footpath and vehicle crossings will be built.

With the asphalt work and final surfacing, the team will be needing to adjust traffic management layouts, and at times dropping lanes and moving live lanes around the intersection. At all times, we will be focusing on minimising disruption and completing the works as efficiently as possible.

New traffic signs and an sign overhead gantry will be added, to help drivers navigate the new road layout. Lastly the team will add the finishing touches such as road marking and landscaping before the traffic management is removed.

Upcoming temporary intersection closures

Later this month the left turn from Cobham Drive into Cambridge Road will be closed for up to two weeks, to allow Hamilton City Council to complete the water connection work, the Waka Kotahi project team to build traffic islands on Cambridge Road, and for final surfacing and line marking. This timing is weather dependent and works will be during day time hours, with resident access maintained.

Residents in the area will get a letter confirming the dates of these closures closer to the time.
