Ngā Ūranga to Pito-One section consents approved

Kia ora,

The Environmental Protection Authority has announced today that consents have been approved for the Ngā Ūranga ki Pito-one (Ngauranga to Petone) section of Te Ara Tupua.

The project was included in the COVID-19 Recovery (Fast-track Consenting) Act, meaning an expert consenting panel considered the project, working more quickly than a traditional consenting process. The consent decision is exciting news because it means that construction of the project can begin, subject to funding approval.

The project, when it opens, will give people more choice of ways to get around between Wellington and the Hutt. By 2030, we estimate that over 2,200 people will cycle the route each day, more than triple the current number of people riding on SH2.

If funding is approved, the first construction and enabling work could begin in the middle of this year. From then, we think it will take around three years to complete the project and open the new path.

Thank you for following the progress of Te Ara Tupua so far. We look forward to sharing the next steps with you.
