Looking Ahead: The NHS 10-Year Health Plan

Earlier this month, the Government launched its new 10-Year Health Plan for England, setting out long-term priorities for the future of health and care services.

The plan is built around three key shifts:

  • From hospital to community. More care delivered closer to home through neighbourhood teams and virtual wards.
  • From analogue to digital. Increasing the use of technology across services to improve access, efficiency and patient experience.
  • From sickness to prevention. A greater focus on early intervention, healthier lifestyles and reducing health inequalities.

The concept of a “neighbourhood health service” is central to the plan, aiming to make health care more proactive, personalised and locally delivered.

We are already well placed to respond to this plan. Much of what the plan describes is already underway in our Trust,  from closer working with community partners to digital innovation and a strong focus on early support and prevention.

While it will take time to fully understand the implications of the plan, we are reviewing it carefully to consider how it might affect our services and the people we support. As always, we remain focused on delivering safe, compassionate care and working in partnership with our communities.

We’ll continue to share updates on our website as more detail becomes available.

CEO Challenge for Health Stars Charity

This month, Michele Moran, Chief Executive took on her annual fundraising challenge in support of the Trust’s charity - Health Stars. This year’s event took place on 3 July 2025, marking the 77th birthday of the NHS.

The challenge involved a series of tasks uncovered through a 100 mile treasure hunt visiting Trust sites and taking on activities that tested her physical strength, mental agility and knowledge of the local area!

Thank you to the staff, patients and residents who spent time setting up the challenges and helping Michele along the day and everyone who helped us navigate across the Trust!

Michele raised over £3000 for our charity, Health Stars to support better healthcare and experience across services provided by our Trust.

Keeping Children and Young People Safe Around Water This Summer

With the summer holidays in full swing, many children and young people will be spending more time around water to cool off. From garden paddling pools to local rivers and beaches, understanding the risks and knowing how to talk about them to young people can make a real difference.

Children are naturally curious, which is why it is so important to stay alert around water. Many child drownings happen close to home such as in the bath, shallow paddling pools, hot tubs or even garden ponds.

  • A drowning child doesn't splash about or cry for help. They slip quietly under the water, often unnoticed.
  • Keep little children in arm's reach whenever they are in or near water.
  • Check for ponds, pools and hot tubs if you're visiting new places.
  • Empty paddling pools after use and store or turn them upside down to prevent them from refilling.
  • Young babies are unable to lift their heads very well, so can get stuck face down in water and drown very quickly. This can happen even in very shallow water - as little as 5cm.

Young People

It’s also important to talk to older children and young people about the dangers of open water. Strong currents, cold temperatures that can cause shock, and hidden objects beneath the surface are all risks to be aware of when spending time around water this summer.

What young people need to know about open water:

  • Cold water can be dangerous even on a hot day, lakes, rivers and the sea can be much colder than you expect. Cold water shock can cause your body to panic and make it hard to breathe or move. Even good swimmers can get into danger.

  • You can't always see the risks. Open water might look calm but can hide strong currents, sharp objects, large rocks, or sudden drops.

  • Swimming in unsupervised areas means no lifeguards and fewer people around to help in an emergency.

  • Jumping into unknown water is risky, what looks deep could be shallow, and you might not see rocks or other dangers under the surface.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) have great educational resources to teach young people how to be safe in, on and around the water, and what to do if anything goes wrong.

Staff Governor Profile - Simon Mills

I have worked continuously across both the Local Authority and the NHS for 40 years. My career began as a Care Assistant, eventually progressing to become a Social Worker. Although I was initially employed by what would become East Riding of Yorkshire Council, I was seconded to Humber NHS Foundation Trust in the early 2000s to help establish a new mental health service.

In 2014, I moved to the south bank to join a mental health crisis team. During this time, I qualified as an Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) and later became the team manager. I have since returned fully to Humber, where I now serve as a Team Manager within the Learning Disability Service.

Previously, I also served as a governor with a former Trust, which gave me valuable insight into how a Trust operates, the people who make it work, and how patients are placed at the heart of everything we do. I’ve often been described as inquisitive, though some might say that’s just a polite way of calling me “nosey”! I genuinely enjoy understanding what goes on behind the scenes and have come to appreciate that, regardless of our roles, we all contribute to the Trust’s success.

I’m a strong advocate for a healthy work-life balance and cherish time spent with family and friends. While I don’t walk as much as I’d like, those who know me will agree that I enjoy sharing my opinions, and hearing others’ too.

Friends and Family Test

The Friends and Family Test (FFT) is an important feedback tool that supports the fundamental principle that people who use NHS services should have the opportunity to provide feedback on their experience. It provides a mechanism to highlight patient experience and is vital in transforming NHS services, supporting patient choice and implementing changes based on your feedback.

Each month we will be sharing patient experiences from our different services, alongside a patient comment.

99.10%
